More Than a Guide — Ayalew Made Lalibela Truly Memorable

We booked our Lalibela tour with Hidden Ethiopia, and from the very beginning, Ayalew was incredibly helpful and accommodating. Even several days before our arrival, he proactively contacted me to make sure everything was going smoothly, and he also helped us arrange our local flights. I had just arrived after a very long journey from Jakarta, and my feet were swollen and sore. Ayalew immediately understood that I needed to take things a little more slowly and did his best to adjust the pace and make our visit to the churches as comfortable as possible. I really appreciated this, especially in Lalibela where there is quite a lot of walking! We stayed at Sora Lodge, which was a lovely place to stay and complemented the experience very well. What impressed me most, however, was Ayalew’s knowledge and connection to Lalibela. He knows the churches in remarkable detail, and it seemed as though he knew everyone around the church compounds! Walking through Lalibela with someone so connected to the place made the experience feel much more personal. You can also tell that guiding is not simply a job for him. He genuinely loves Ethiopia and is passionate about sharing its history, culture and stories with visitors. That enthusiasm made a real difference — we weren’t simply being taken from one church to another; we felt that we were being introduced to Lalibela by someone who truly cares about it. If you are visiting Lalibela and want a knowledgeable, attentive and genuinely passionate local guide, I would happily recommend Ayalew and Hidden Ethiopia. Thank you, Ayalew, for making our first experience of Lalibela such a memorable one.

Response from the operator: Thank you for the fantastic feedback! We are thrilled Ayalew could take good care of you, adjust the pace for your tired feet, and make your time exploring Lalibela and staying at Sora Lodge so memorable. We truly appreciate your recommendation!"

    Astounding location

We had a fantastic time in Lalilbela with Ayalew's company. Everything about the trip was perfect - the lodge was gorgeous, the airport pickup was easy, and the site itself is absolutely amazing. I definitely recommend booking the 3 day / 2 night itinerary - a single night means feeling rushed. You need to have time to just linger at the churches.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for this wonderful review! We are absolutely thrilled to hear that your 3-day trip to Lalibela was perfect, from the lodge and easy airport pickup to the incredible churches. We completely agree that taking 2 nights allows the perfect amount of time to truly linger and take in the magic of the site without feeling rushed. It was a pleasure hosting you, and we truly appreciate you recommending our itinerary to other travelers!
