    About this experience

The mine, built in the 13th century, produced table salt continuously until 2007, as one of the world's oldest salt mines still in operation.  The mine's attractions include dozens of statues, three chapels and an entire cathedral that has been carved out of the rock salt by the miners. The Wieliczka mine is often referred to as "the Underground Salt Cathedral of Poland." In 1978 it was placed on the original UNESCO list of the World Heritage Sites.Today, the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine combines many centuries of tradition and modernity, the history of several hundred years and an underground metropolis with extensive infrastructure.

Lots of walking and not good enough talking

Let me first state that I am a geologist and have been in many mines and caves. This mine is the biggest salt mine I have visited. But I didn’t care for the 380 stairs to just enter the mine. And you will go twice as deep via stairs or ramp. I didn’t care for all the carvings. They all seemed to be added and not hewn from the salt bedrock. There is a lot of walking along wooden corridors and not much visible salt except in the over decorated chambers. You don’t learn much on the geology or mine history. Our tour group in English had 22 people. The one earbud they give you makes for poor quality sound from the guide.

Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing your feedback. We understand that everyone has different expectations when visiting the Salt Mine. However, comments regarding the mine itself, the route, the number of stairs, the chambers, the sculptures, or the guiding system would be more appropriate to share on the official Wieliczka Salt Mine website, as these elements are managed entirely by the mine. Our service is focused on providing transportation and organizing entrance tickets. We are glad that the pickup from your hotel, transportation, and return transfer were completed perfectly, and we appreciate your recognition of this part of the experience. #saltmine #krakow

    Impressive

The Salt mines were part of the tour package. They were very impressive with all that was in there. The cathedral and the carving of the last supper was impressive even though I am not a religious person. I would go again if I ever return to Poland.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your wonderful review! We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Wieliczka Salt Mine. The underground chapels, breathtaking salt carvings, and the famous St. Kinga’s Chapel, with its remarkable Last Supper relief, make this UNESCO World Heritage Site one of Poland’s most unforgettable attractions. It’s great to know the experience exceeded your expectations, and we’re especially happy that you would visit again on your next trip to Poland. Thank you for choosing our Wieliczka Salt Mine Tour from Krakow. We hope to welcome you back for another memorable adventure, perhaps to Auschwitz-Birkenau, Zakopane, or one of the many other incredible places near Krakow. Safe travels, and we look forward to seeing you again!

Something I could have not bothered seeing

Unfortunately I found the whole experience very rushed. I didn’t really enjoy it and found it boring. The tour guide was great, very knowledgeable and spoke clearly. Bear in mind to leave you have to go in a very small lift. It fits 9 people and you are squashed in. Not nice at all. Had to wait quite a long time.

Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing your feedback. We would like to clarify that we are not the tour operator or the organizer of the guided visit itself. The tours inside the museum are conducted exclusively by licensed museum guides, and the itinerary, pace, and group organization are fully managed by the museum. Regarding the elevator, there is only one available exit system in the facility due to preservation and safety regulations. It is a small lift designed to transport visitors in limited groups, and unfortunately there is no alternative exit route. We are sorry to hear that the experience felt rushed or not enjoyable for you. We always encourage visitors to share such feedback directly with the museum, as they are responsible for guiding operations and visitor flow. Thank you again for your comments.

Spectacular to see but was a rushed tour

Easily booked tickets direct on the salt mines website. Salt mines were spectacular. Down side for me was the size of the group being too large in the tour, if you were at the back you couldn’t see what the guide was referring to when she spoke and you were rushed through to the next section before the next group that was behind you. The audio equipment could do with upgrading as you couldn’t always pick up the signal, in ear headphones were uncomfortable.

Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing your feedback! 😊 We’re glad to hear you enjoyed the Wieliczka Salt Mine and found this unique underground attraction spectacular. ✨ We appreciate your comments regarding the group size and audio equipment — your feedback is valuable and helps us improve the experience for future travelers. We hope to welcome you again on another tour from Krakow! 🇵🇱 #WieliczkaSaltMine #KrakowTours #PolandTravel #KrakowDiscovery

Krakow Salt Mine Guided Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Krakow.

How much does Krakow Salt Mine Guided Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $95 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Krakow usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Krakow Salt Mine Guided Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Krakow is not rushed.

Is Krakow Salt Mine Guided Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 61 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.5/5 across 36 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Krakow, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Krakow Salt Mine Guided Tour?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Krakow Salt Mine Guided Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Krakow Salt Mine Guided Tour?

    +

Around 13 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Krakow can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Krakow and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Krakow Salt Mine Guided Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Krakow within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Krakow?

    +

On Outty we rank every Krakow experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Complete Cracow Bike Tour (small group of maximum 15 people!), Krakow–Zakopane: Cable Car, Chocholow Baths, Cheese & Vodka, Krakow: Zakopane & Hot Springs Tour with Cable Car (Hotel Pickup). The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Krakow?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Krakow?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
