  2. Koh Ker Temple

Koh Ker was the capital of the Khmer Empire for a brief period, between 928-941 C.E. under its founder King Jayavarman IV. As yet, the only authentic, contemporary information about the political ideology of Angkor comes from the Koh Ker inscription which establishes a clear shift of Khmer political ideology from ‘rāja’ or king, to ‘rājya’ or the kingdom and its people. In support of this new ideology, no war was waged by Jayavarman IV; his reign was the most peaceful phase of the Khmer Empire, which enabled a cultural resurgence. This time of peace allowed Jayavarman IV to carry out projects of regional, social, economic and architectural development, town planning and rural infrastructure, of which the ensemble of monuments at Koh Ker bear testimony.

  3. This small temple is in a fair state of preservation, with three surviving sanctuary towers and two libraries. While its enclosure walls survive, the temple's east gopura no longer exists apart from its foundation stones. We do not know when precisely when the temple was constructed as it was never fully completed--note the unfinished lintels above all five of the doorways.

  4. Prasat Beng Mealea

Beng Mealea is one of the most evocative Angkor temples around Siem Reap. A central tower lies in rubble with vines and roots slowly constricting walls adorned with ancient Khmer art. Through the dappled light of huge trees growing through the ruins, impressive carvings hint at the importance of this once great temple.

Great combination of nature and architechture

This was a great experience, with Beng Mealea turning out to be an unexpected jam with an incredible combination of nature and architechture. Our guide, Sopal was very kind and patient (we travelled with a 2-year-old, so we needed that). I absolutely recommend this for families.

Good driver, nice destinations, but all in all a little too expensive

Koh Ker, especially the pyramid and Beng Mealea are very worth seeing and not crowded. Worth a visit, the tour consisted of only one rider, who did his thing very well. The price is a little high.

Memories in the Ruins

MAN'S mighty works are as nothing to the power of Nature, something we found out on a Siem Reap Shuttle tour to the temples of Beng Mealea and Koh Ker. Unlike restored sites such as Angkor Wat, Beng Mealea is largely unrestored with trees and undergrowth thriving on the site where fallen stones lie in great heaps. In many ways I found this sight to be more evocative than many temple sites because it was as if Beng Mealea had just fallen asleep. I clambered about, picking my way from one tumbled pile of stones to another, many with intricate carvings on them softened by time and moss. It was utterly fascinating because I could imagine what the whole place must have been like in its prime. Kok Ker was different with some restoration going on together with more evidence of how invasive the jungle had been with tree roots embracing several stone structures. The majestic pyramid temple appeared to offer a daunting climb up a huge stone staircase with no hand rails, but authorities had created a wooden staircase round to one side so visitors could climb to the top in relative safety to enjoy its stunning views. It was a great day out and definitely worth taking this opportunity to get out right away from Siem Reap to see archaeological sites where Nature still largely rules.

Koh Ker & Beng Mealea Temple Full-Day Private Tour from Siem Reap: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Siem Reap.

How much does Koh Ker & Beng Mealea Temple Full-Day Private Tour from Siem Reap cost?

+

Prices start at $45 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Siem Reap usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Koh Ker & Beng Mealea Temple Full-Day Private Tour from Siem Reap take?

+

Plan for about 7 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Siem Reap is not rushed.

Is Koh Ker & Beng Mealea Temple Full-Day Private Tour from Siem Reap worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 65 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 8 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Siem Reap, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Koh Ker & Beng Mealea Temple Full-Day Private Tour from Siem Reap?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Koh Ker & Beng Mealea Temple Full-Day Private Tour from Siem Reap suitable for kids and families?

+

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 7-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Koh Ker & Beng Mealea Temple Full-Day Private Tour from Siem Reap?

+

Around 3 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Siem Reap can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Siem Reap and add a light layer if any part of the 7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Koh Ker & Beng Mealea Temple Full-Day Private Tour from Siem Reap start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Siem Reap within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Siem Reap?

+

On Outty we rank every Siem Reap experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Angkor Wat Sunrise or Sunset Small-Group and Guide tours, Angkor Wat full Day 'Small Group with sunset & Tour Guide, Angkor Wat Sunrise or Sunset Tour with Guide from Siem Reap. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Siem Reap?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Siem Reap?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
