Nothing more than a tourist trap.

Pure tourist trap. The stretch has a series of similar stilt fishermen photo shoot spots for tourist to take pics. They charge a steep.price from.tourusts to take pics. Most of these fishermen are seen lazing around in their huts and sheds nearby and on arrival of tourists ,they get to work for the photo shoot with actual fishing catch not visible. Most of the tourist guides and drivers bring in tourists here ,which is not worth a visit.

    Stilt Fishermen at Ritipanna

We went to see the stilt fishermen and to try it out for ourselves, the wife caught a fish but I didn't lol. The guys were very informative and even gave us a fresh coconut drink and coconut flesh to eat whilst we were there.

    Con, scam, rip off

A well organised scam you should avoid. They wanted 5000 ringgit for a photo of a moth eaten actor sitting on a pole. I would have given it a zero if that was available here. This is nothing to do with Sri Lankan culture nor its traditions. It is two or three actors sitting on poles pretending to fish, and demanding a large fee for it. We were delivered like lambs for the slaughter, or more exactly tourists for the plucking, by our driver. An aggressive “fixer”was policing of payment. I refused to partake in the scam , got straight back in the car and we drove on This was at the start of our trip to Sri Lanka, and is not a good omen of what is to come

Response from the operator: "Thank you for sharing your experience. We completely understand your frustration, and it's unfortunate that what you encountered gave you a negative impression of the tradition. You have highlighted a key issue we address on this page. During the off-season, what was once a genuine fishing method does indeed become a static cultural display, and some individuals may aggressively demand money for photos. This is not the authentic stilt fishing tradition. The true seasonal practice of active fishing, which the local community is striving to preserve, is entirely different. Our goal is to educate visitors about this difference and to highlight the authentic heritage, which is deeply connected to Sri Lankan coastal life. We are sorry your experience felt like a scam. We hope this information helps clarify the context for other travelers."

    Not worth it

I went there as part of a tuktuk tour. I was told that it was 2000LKR to see them. When we arrived, they were relaxing on the side of the road. 2 of them went on the pole just so I can take a picture. There is no fishing pole, no talking, nothing. Just a picture cost me 2000LKR. I should have checked the reviews before I went.

Stilt men fishing what a great time.

So I’ve read so many reviews on this but I see so many negative ones, however we had the best time, yes you do have to agree a price, no of course they will not let you take their photos for free, after all they need to earn a living too. Another review summed it up perfectly, This is like a living museum. We went to the Stilt men in Koggala opposite the little cafe. It’s not a lot of money and in return we got as many photos as we wanted and my husband even had a go, we had so much fun and they were so welcoming. Even had a bucket of clean water for us to clean our feet at the road side. This was a great memory of our trip to Sri Lanka.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful words — your review truly means more than you may realize. After reading many negative comments in the past, some of our team — especially the fishermen — felt deeply discouraged, even to the point of tears. These are humble men who are simply trying to keep a tradition alive while supporting their families. When their culture is reduced to a “tourist trap,” it hurts. That’s why your understanding, your respect for their work, and your joyful spirit during your visit touched us so deeply. You saw the human side — not just a photo moment, but a living cultural story, shared with warmth. We’re so glad your husband had a chance to try it, and that you left with a great memory. Thank you for seeing us with kindness. Guests like you help keep this tradition alive with dignity and heart.

    Koggala Secrets: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Galle.

How much does Koggala Secrets cost?

    +

Prices start at $450 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Galle usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Koggala Secrets take?

    +

Plan for about 48 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Galle is not rushed.

    Is Koggala Secrets worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 53 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (2.6/5 across 5 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Galle, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Koggala Secrets?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Koggala Secrets suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 48-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Koggala Secrets?

    +

Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Galle can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Galle and add a light layer if any part of the 48-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Koggala Secrets start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Galle within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Galle?

    +

On Outty we rank every Galle experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Sea waves sri lankan cooking class, Galle Unawatuna Cooking Class, Whale Watching Mirissa with WWC. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Galle?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Galle?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
