Chinese Fishing Nets
Chinese fishing nets(Cheena vala)are a type of stationary lift net in India. They are fishing nets that are fixed land installations for fishing. While commonly known as Chinese fishing nets in India, the more formal name for such nets is shore operated lift nets. Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20m or more across. Each structure is at least 10m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end which is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. While such nets are used throughout coastal southern China and Indochina, in India they are mostly found in the Indian cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This way of fishing is unusual in India and almost unique to the area, as it was introduced by Chinese explorers who landed there in the 14th century. Indeed, one interpretation of city name Kochi is ‘co-chin', meaning like China.

The Vannar community leaders who run the laundry has approached the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) seeking assistance to set up modern facilities to wash and dry clothes. The laundry service started by the Vannar community from Tamil Nadu during the Dutch period still follows the traditional method of washing clothes by hand, drying them in the open and ironing. Around 45 washermen are employed at the laundry. The latest move by the Vannar Sangham is to lure youngsters in the community to the traditional vocation and thereby to retain it.

Niyas the best Tuk Tuk driver
Our driver Niyas was amazing, not at all pushy or aggressive as many of the other drivers. Great command of English language, Knowledgeable and informative of Kochi’s past and present. Took us to quality shops where we negotiated great prices. We explored the local spice market and stopped to buy fresh pressed oils and Ayurvedic medicines. He helped us get our laundry done and shoes repaired. What a great guy, honest, educated and kind. Book Niyas

The best guide in Kerala
Had a wonderful time with Niyas! Spent 3 days touring around the city and recommending the best shops and things to do. Such a lovely time and he definitely was a big part of that. On ur last night we did henna with his wife and had dinner with his family, which was the highlight of my trip . If you are ever in Fort Cochi and need a guide I would absolutely book with Niyas

An Excellent Experience in Kochi with Niyas
I had a wonderful experience with Niyas in Kochi. He kindly showed me all the main sights of the city and made the whole trip very comfortable and enjoyable. He was extremely friendly, polite, punctual, and very pleasant to communicate with. His spoken English was very good, with clear pronunciation, so it was always easy to understand him and talk to him. Niyas also helped me with many practical local things: getting to different places, finding restaurants, exchanging money, and choosing good places for shopping. He was always reliable, helpful, and gave useful advice. I highly recommend Niyas as an excellent driver and guide in Kochi.
