What you'll see and do
The Palace of Knossos
Knossos, the heart of the Minoan civilization, lies 5 km southeast of Heraklion, in the valley of the river Kairatos. Crete’s most famous historical attraction, he site is considered to be the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on the island and is referred to as the oldest city in Europe. Knossos was first inhabited by a Neolithic settlement in the seventh century BC. It stayed inhabited for several thousands of years until it was finally abandoned in 1375 BC after its destruction, which marked the end of Minoan civilisation. In 1878, the first large-scale excavation was undertaken by the wealthy art-lover Minos Kalokairinos, while Crete was still under Turkish occupation. This was followed by the long-term excavations (1900-1913 and 1922-1930) of Sir Arthur Evans, who uncovered the whole surrounding area of Knossos.

Heraklion Archaeological Museum
The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is one of the largest and most visited museums in Greece. It is also among the most important museums in Europe. It is home to artefacts from all the periods of Cretan prehistory and history. The exhibitions cover a chronological span of over 5,500 years from the Neolithic period to Roman times. The Minoan collection contains unique examples of Minoan art, many of them true masterpieces. The Archaeological Museum is located in the centre of Heraklion and was built between 1937 and 1940 by the architect Patroklos Karantinos. It was built on a site previously occupied by the Roman Catholic monastery of Saint-Francis which was destroyed by earthquake in 1856. The colors and construction materials used in the building, are similar to certain Minoan wall-paintings.

An unforgettable and perfectly organized experienc
This tour was truly one of the highlights of our trip to Crete. From my very first message to Christine, while I was still planning everything from Mexico, she was incredibly kind and helpful. She provided detailed information, researched other tours for us and shared many thoughtful recommendations. On the day of the tour, Christine and our driver, Thanos, were wonderful. Throughout the journey, they told us fascinating stories about Crete and the region. They also made a special effort to engage my daughter and make the experience enjoyable for her, which was a detail I deeply appreciated. At Knossos, they arranged for us to have a Spanish speaking guide named Maria, who was simply exceptional. She was knowledgeable, engaging and brought the history of Knossos to life in a way that made our visit truly memorable. On the way back, Christine took us through beautiful Rethymno and even spent some time teaching us a little Greek, which was such a fun and personal touch. Everything was perfectly organized and right on time. They also provided snacks and drinks throughout the day. More than just a tour, it felt like spending the day discovering Crete with thoughtful and knowledgeable local friends. An absolutely wonderful experience from beginning to end. 10 out of 10. I could not recommend Christine, Thanos, Maria and SeaByBus Explore Crete more highly!
Response from the operator: Thank you so much Manolo for taking the time to share such a wonderful and heartfelt review. ❤️ It truly means the world to all of us at SeaByBus Explore Crete. Christine, Thanos, and Maria will be absolutely delighted to hear your kind words. We’re especially happy that the Spanish-speaking guided visit at Knossos made the experience even more meaningful for you. Maria will be thrilled to know that her knowledge, enthusiasm, and storytelling helped bring the fascinating history of Knossos to life for your family. We are also so happy that your daughter Ivana enjoyed the day and that all the little touches—from the stories and snacks to the walk through beautiful Rethymno and the Greek lessons—made you feel not simply like guests on a tour, but like friends discovering Crete with locals. It was a real pleasure welcoming you and your family to Crete. Thank you for your trust, your kindness, and your incredible recommendation. We hope to see you back in Crete one day for another unforgettable adventure! 🇬🇷💙

Knossos Palace, Museum & Rethymno city Private Tour from Chania: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Chania.
How much does Knossos Palace, Museum & Rethymno city Private Tour from Chania cost?
+
Prices start at $540 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Chania usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Knossos Palace, Museum & Rethymno city Private Tour from Chania take?
+
Plan for about 10 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Chania is not rushed.
Is Knossos Palace, Museum & Rethymno city Private Tour from Chania worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 76 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 85 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Chania, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Knossos Palace, Museum & Rethymno city Private Tour from Chania?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Knossos Palace, Museum & Rethymno city Private Tour from Chania suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 10-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Knossos Palace, Museum & Rethymno city Private Tour from Chania?
+
Around 30 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Chania can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Chania and add a light layer if any part of the 10-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Knossos Palace, Museum & Rethymno city Private Tour from Chania start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Chania within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Chania?
+
On Outty we rank every Chania experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Half-Day Rethymno Quad Safari, Elafonisi & Falasarna Small Group Tour from Chania w/snacks, Balos & Falassarna Beach - Jeep Tour with Loungers and Lunch. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Chania?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Chania?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
