Explore some of Jordan’s historical treasures on this full-day private tour to Jerash, Ajloun, and Umm Qais from Amman. Head towards Jerash and delve into its rich history as you explore its colonnaded streets, hilltop temples, amphitheater, public squares, plazas, and temples. Jerash is one of the best preserved classical sites; a rich and prosperous Greek and Roman city. It was founded by Alexander the Great around 331 BC, it later became one of the great Decapolis cities of the east. It is also a Bronze settlement where you can find the Temple of Artemis, the Forum, the oval plaza, as well as Hadrian’s Arch. Learn about the city and how it rose with a Greek federation, and then lived through the Muslim and Christian rule, which eventually fell during the Crusades.

Ajlun Castle (Qala'at ar-Rabad)
Proceed to Ajloun and visit the Ajloun Castle; a 12th Century fortress built by the forces of Saladin against the Crusaders. It was built to dominate the 3 major passages into northwest Jordan. This hilltop edifice is a striking example of medieval Arab-Islamic military architecture. The structures, towers, chambers, galleries, and staircases that form part of the town, as well as the beautiful scenery that surrounds the hills nearby, will captivate you for sure. Climb into the tower and look around to take in the historical atmosphere and delve into the picturesque views of the Jordan Valley to the Dead Sea.

Archaeological Museum of Umm Qais
Later on, drive towards Umm Qais; one of the most stunning Greco-Roman cities. Learn about the ruins of the Decapolis city of Gadara, now known as Umm Qais. This place is stunning due to the contrast and juxtaposition of the Roman Ruins with the abandoned Ottoman-era village. Take in the breathtaking views from an extraordinary vantage point, with views of 3 countries; Jordan, Syria, and the Israel and Palestinian Territories. According to the Bible, it is the site of the famous miracle of the Gadarene swine; when Jesus cast down the demons out of 2 men into a herd of pigs. Finally, reconvene with your driver and return to Amman, where your tour ends with a drop-off at any central location of your choosing.

Amazing Day Tour
I had an amazing time visiting Jerash, Ajloun and Umm Qais. My driver Ali was amazing. He communicated the day before , the expected time line and picked me up on time. He is very friendly and I felt safe as a female solo traveler. He checked on me if I was ok when Im the last one to came out of Jerash 😂. I learned so much about this tour too. This tour is a MUST. There is so much to see in Jordan not just Petra. And the locals that I met are friendly 😊

Welcome!
Right at the start of the tour, I began experiencing symptoms of food poisoning. This could have ruined the day since I was feeling unwell, but the driver, Nedal, was super helpful, patient, and flexible in adapting the itinerary and timing according to my limits. Nedal is clearly passionate about his country and enjoys sharing its cuisine, landscapes, and stories. I felt very safe, welcomed, and satisfied with the tour, and I was able to visit and enjoy all three locations, which are impressive.

Highly recommend!!
The day excursion we booked to visit Umm Qays, Ajloun Castle and Jerash was brilliant from start to finish. We were picked right on time, and all of the driving between locations was smooth and timely. Ali was a superb driver who supplied local knowledge for each of the locations as well as general knowledge in relation to the country. He was engaging with conversation and we loved how opinionated he was on the topics we were discussing. A very intelligent man with passion for the country he is from and couldn’t recommend him more. Umm Qays was a surprise as the site was far larger than expected, full of amazing artefacts and history for the area. Ajloun Castle was a short stop in comparison but no less interesting. Jerash, however, was the cherry on top the end of our visit. A vast site with seemingly endless examples of Greco-Roman architecture and history. An incredible place now, so imagining what it was like when it was built is awe-inspiring.

Northern Jordan experience
Ali our driver was very knowledgeable and communicative. He was very punctual and had our safety and interests at heart. Was good to be at Jerash by 8am. You beat the heat and crowds. Would recommend if you do this trip take a lunch box from the hotel as there’s a lot of driving and traffic around Amman . We were gone from 7am til nearly 4pm without stopping for lunch.
