Learn How Fish Go From the Fishing Boats to Restaurants
Sesimbra has elevated the commercial fish auction and processing plant to be one of the most efficient operations in Portugal! Tomás, our guide, arranged for us to gain access to the secured port where the local fishing industry sells their catch to commercial buyers. We saw the fish leave the boats, get sorted and evaluated for type, freshness, weight and size minutes before they were photographed and auctioned off to the highest bidders. We sat in the stands with commercial seafood buyers who were bidding on the catches. Other buyers were viewing the catch online in real time. Tomás explained the entire process as we watched orange tubs of sorted fish on a conveyor belt pass in front of us. LaterTomás walked us around the gated port where we saw fishermen making and straightening nets. One even stopped to show us how he puts hooks on a line that will plunge hundreds of feet to catch fish. Only in a place like Sesimbra with a local guide can a tourist see how the locals thrive as they have for hundreds of years. Later that day we saw an orange tub of octopus being delivered to a local restaurant where the special of the day was Portuguese baked octopus.

Behind Sesimbra's Fish Trade
The Hooked On Sesimbra tour offers a detailed look into the fish processing industry in Sesimbra. Leonor, our guide, provided clear and informative commentary in English. The itinerary included observing a live auction, visiting fishermen working on nets, and watching fishing boats get ready for their trips. I would recommended it for anyone interested in the behind-the-scenes aspects of the fishing trade.
Response from the operator: Ralph, thank you so much for your kind words. Hope it had exceeded all expectations! Hope to see you again in Sesimbra!

Amazing day at fishing port
Hooked on Sesimbra is a great experience organized by Marcelo in his hometown. Sesimbra is a very nice marine town fully devoted to the ocean. Fishing traditions go from generation to generation. We visited port and had a relaxed walk in town getting known its history and traditions, tasting its unique pastries and drinks. Marcelo is a great host and very interesting person. He is very easygoing and communicative. He organized our nice group so everybody felt involved. We are really happy with our decision to take this experience and would highly recommend it to everybody. Hope to visit Sesimbra again and have new experience with Portugalska team!

As happened, I was the only person...

As happened, I was the only person on this tour that day, but Marcello was a great guide and person and we got to be friends, so how nice is that. I learned a lot about the fishing industry and had a boat ride along the coast and a great dinner at a tiny place in the town. It was a fine day.

Is Hooked on Sesimbra: Fish Auction Tour Near Lisbon worth it?
+

How far in advance should I book Hooked on Sesimbra: Fish Auction Tour Near Lisbon?
+
Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Setubal District can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Setubal District and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in Setubal District?
+
On Outty we rank every Setubal District experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Sesimbra : Guided Kayak Tour in Arrábida Natural Park & Caves, Sesimbra: Arrábida Dolphin and Whale Watching tour with biologist, Observation of Dolphins and Whales with Marine Biologist in Arrábida. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Setubal District?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Setubal District?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
