About this experience
The Treadwell mine collapse of 1917 ended an era of gold and industry in Alaska. Today, the preserved ruins of this massive site sit quietly among the trees. While the forest has grown in around it, the foundations, machinery, and stories still remain. This guided walking tour takes you through the original streets of Treadwell, past towering ruins, old mine shafts, and up to the edge of the 1917 cave-in. Along the way, carefully placed immersive media scenes help bring key moments of history to life right where they happened. The tour spans 2–3 miles of scenic walking trails, showcasing a century-old industrial footprint that few visitors ever see. Along the way, your guide shares stories of the people who both built and lost this remarkable place.

Hidden gem, locally owned small business!
We (2 adults and our 16 year old) booked this tour looking for something different to do in Juneau. We couldn't have been more pleased with this hidden gem! The augmented reality technology really helped me to appreciate what Treadwell once looked like and how it operated. Katie was a wealth of information about the Treadwell mine and Juneau in general. We were picked up by Ishmael at our ship (despite docking at the AJ doc!) and he was amazing as well. He was very knowledgeable about Juneau and made the short ride over to the old mine site enjoyable. Walking is required, but we found it to be an easy stroll on well-maintained paths. We would happily support this locally owned small business any day!

Creative interpretation of an historical site
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I signed up for this activity. I was delighted when our guide, Katie, started leading the tour. Using iPads, the Treadwell Mine was brought to life. Historical photos were overlaid with the current scenery. I first learned of this mine from a Discovery+ show many months ago, and was thrilled to see it in real life.
Response from the operator: Hi Dr. Scott, That's awesome that you first learned about Treadwell on Discovery+. I'll have to look that up. Glad we lived up to expectations and you enjoyed the tour! Aaron

Great historical tour!
Wow. What a great tour! Ishmael was an excellent guide and a good soul. He was so knowledgeable and passionate about the story of Treadwell. The augmented reality scenes helped bring the story to life. The beautiful weather only made the experience that much better.
Response from the operator: Hi Randy, Thank you so much for the kind review. It's great to hear that Ishmael left a strong impression. I agree that he's both an excellent guide and good soul. Thanks for spending your vacation with us!

Great for kids as well
The AI generated moving images on the supplied I pads of what it was like to be gold mining in the late 1800’s really brought the walk to life. Katie had a real passion on describing the local history Thank-you
Response from the operator: Hi Colin! Thank you for the kind words! Katie's passion is why we hired her..:) We appreciate that you spent your vacation with us. As a general clarification to other potential guests, this tour utilizes augmented reality (AR). But it was all made by super talented humans and no artificial intelligence (AI) was used in the design, research, or software development.

Great Experience
Fantastic hike and tour of the Treadwell Gold Mines led by knowledgeable friendly folks. Aaron, Travis and Ishmael were timely, courteous and very communicative. Physical experience with AI implementation; we were each given individual tablets with a virtual view of how the sites once were along with real photographs and facts. History, nature and great conversation; definitely recommend.
Response from the operator: Hi Elizabeth! With all three of us being born and raised Alaskans, I'm glad to hear that the courtesy and communication left an impression. We take a lot of pride in that. Thanks for sharing your experience with other travelers!

Why this scores 67
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Historical Walking Tour of Abandoned Gold Rush Era City with AR: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Juneau.
How much does Historical Walking Tour of Abandoned Gold Rush Era City with AR cost?
+
Prices start at $119 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Juneau usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Historical Walking Tour of Abandoned Gold Rush Era City with AR take?
+
Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Juneau is not rushed.
Is Historical Walking Tour of Abandoned Gold Rush Era City with AR worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 67 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 29 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Juneau, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Historical Walking Tour of Abandoned Gold Rush Era City with AR?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Historical Walking Tour of Abandoned Gold Rush Era City with AR suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Historical Walking Tour of Abandoned Gold Rush Era City with AR?
+
Around 10 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Juneau can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Juneau and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Historical Walking Tour of Abandoned Gold Rush Era City with AR start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Juneau within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Juneau?
+
Juneau runs Mendenhall Glacier trips, whale watching in Auke Bay, helicopter glacier landings with dog sledding, and rainforest hikes. Most tours are timed to cruise ship windows, so we weight clear duration and pickup detail. On Outty we rank every Juneau experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Juneau Wildlife Whale Watching, Juneau Wildlife Whale Watching & Mendenhall Glacier, Whales and Wilderness Exploration. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Juneau?
+
May to September, peaking for humpbacks in June and July. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Juneau?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
