Man Mandir Ghat
Earlier known as Someswara Ghat, Man Mandir Ghat was built in 16th century CE by Raja Man Singh of Amer and was renamed after him. He also built a magnificent palace here and is known for its exquisite ornate window carvings. It is now maintained by Archaeological Survey of India. One can get a panoramic view of all the ghats of Varanasi from the terrace of this palace. An observatory, popularly called as Jantar Mantar, is established atop the Man Singh Palace in 1710 CE by Sawai Jai Singh II. Situated on the western bank of River Ganga, the ghat is dotted with many temples including Rameshwara Temple, Sthuladanta Vinayaka and Someswara temples. Someswara Temple is the exact replica of the Someshwara lingam in Somanath of Gujarat. Many Hindu devotees visit this Ghat to offer prayers to Someshwar.

The Dom community has traditionally been the custodian of cremation grounds. The Doms are keepers of the sacred fire, which is never allowed to die down, and are the cremators of the dead. The CHIEF cremation undertakers at Manikarnika and Harishchandra ghats in Varanasi are called ‘Dom Raja’. Also called ‘Choudhary’, they consider themselves descendants of Kalu Dom, who worked as a cremation undertaker during the regime of Raja Harishchandra, a king in ancient times. It is said that if the person being cremated is to achieve moksha, the fire for dead's funeral pyre must be taken from the Dom Raja.

Heritage walking tour through the streets
It was a heritage walking tour through the streets of the older parts of the city, and it was excellent. The tour guide was a friendly and knowledgeable young man, and he kept my friend and I engaged throughout the trip with information on the histories and associated folklore of the spots we stopped at. One of the planned stops was the Manikarnika ghat, but it was simply way too crowded to go there on that day. Highly recommended tour, well worth it.

Lively overview to central Varansi at night.
Since we arrived in Varanasi in the afternoon, we booked a “2-hours offbeat famous travel experience” tour for the evening. We met Manish at what felt like the epicenter of Varanasi nightlife, did a brief tuk-tuk jaunt, then the rest of the tour was on foot. Manish had to re-orient his usual plans for the tour because we happened to arrive on the day of a lunar eclipse, during which all the temples had to close. Some reopened late and some didn’t reopen at all. So some major temples could only be glimpsed from the outside. We were able to go into a big courtyard of an open temple (non-worshippers can’t go all the way inside) and watch a lively throng of congregants do very enthusiastic songs and chants. We also got a great feel of the street scene and shops, and Manish provided interesting and friendly commentary all the way. I said I needed some cheap disposable footwear for Holi, and he took me into a shop where we quickly found some flip-flops for only 200 rupees. At the end of the tour, he offered to call us an Uber back to our hotel to make it easy and safe for us. Excellent service!

Manish was amazing, it was late in the day so he was great at finding different places for us and new experiences. Manish was also amazingly friendly and accommodating! We had so much fun!
