Looking for another Montreal? Guided by a professional actor and storyteller, this haunted tour is sure to appeal to history buffs, ghost hunters and Allowe’en enthusiasts with its tales of frightening paranormal activity and ghosts haunting unusual places – in the heart of downtown Montreal. Listen to the nauseating and twisted “legend of the red cross”, as well as the new university residence of Concordia, the Grey Nuns’ former motherhouse where a mysterious crypt is located. Visit haunted houses, including a run-down squat on “Overdose” Avenue and a spooky old funeral home converted into one of Montreal’s trendiest nightclubs. Sometimes customers don’t ask for so much, especially if they dare to visit the women’s aisles and attic. And many more stories to discover!

    What you'll see and do

    1. Downtown Montreal is a very busy place. With its towering skyscrapers and a workforce emptying them around 5:00 p.m., it is the last place one would imagine to encounter the paranormal. However, just under the veneer of urban respectability, many dark secrets speak of forgotten graveyards, ghost-infested buildings, and the ghostly activity that follows them. The Haunted Downtown Tour explores bars, forgotten cemeteries, hotels rife with paranormal activity, and many more sites where ghosts have been seen.

I was genuinely looking forward to this tour given Halloween is just around the corner, but it unfortunately fell well below expectations. Having done many haunted tours across Canada, the U.S., and Europe, this one significantly missed the mark in both storytelling and organization. The guide often appeared unprepared—forgetting facts, mixing up names of historical figures, and at times seeming as though they were recalling stories for the first time. Despite emphasizing their background as a former paramedic with firsthand experiences tied to Montréal’s darker history, that level of authenticity never came through. The stories lacked detail, depth, and atmosphere—the essential ingredients that make haunted tours engaging and memorable. To make matters worse, we waited over 15 minutes in the cold (on top of an early arrival to avoid situations such as these) for a late participant who never arrived or provided notice. For those of us who were on time, it would have been more considerate to begin promptly or at least have the guide/organizer contact the missing party for an update. The guide was also accompanied by a partner, though her role was unclear as she didn’t engage with the group or contribute to the storytelling. Throughout the tour, the guide led us down busy streets, often stopping at crowded intersections where traffic noise made it difficult to hear. At times, it felt unsafe and disorganized, as we were expected to focus on the guide’s voice while also navigating pedestrians and oncoming cars. Instead of being drawn into tales of hauntings, many of us lagged behind, quietly chatting among ourselves or walking in silence wishing for the tour to be over. Much of the narration came across as a simplified, “CliffsNotes” version of local legends, and at times, it was hard to tell whether the stories were factual or simply improvised. Overall, the ad misled us to believe the tour would be performed by a professional actor and storyteller. The tour had potential as Montréal is full of dark historical content however, this lacked preparation, cohesion, and depth.

Response from the operator: My deepest apologies for this experience. We learned your guide was feeling disoriented due to a medical issue. He has been placed on a medical leave of absence for now. We will try to contact you to make accommodations. Lastly, I will do me best to make sure this doesn't happen again. My apologies again.

    No ghosts showed up

No ghosts showed up, I guess they were afraid of my sketpicism but the tour guide was nice and qualified. We had a great time.

Response from the operator: Thank you for this great review! For those wishing to experience communicating with ghosts I recommend our Paranormal Investigations! We have one in the old Sainte-Antoine Cemetery and a new Colonial Montreal investigation!

Engaging and super fun, no matter the medium!

Donovan hosted a virtual ghost story hour for a few of my friends and let me tell you, watching through zoom was still an amazing and engrossing experience. I had so much fun and I cannot wait to experience a live walking tour with him. Thanks again, Donovan!

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your attendance, kind words and great review! Looking forward to seeing you again - in person!

What a fantastic tour! Donovan was a wealth of information and made it fun. He is an amazing historian with the real story! Looking forward to doing another tour.

Response from the operator: Thank you, Orla, for your kind words and this great review! It was really nice meeting you and chatting with you about postcolonial issues in Old Montreal for the special Bloomsday Tour. I look forward to seeing you again on another tour in the future!

    Haunted Downtown: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Montreal.

How much does Haunted Downtown cost?

    +

Prices start at $26 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Montreal usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Haunted Downtown take?

    +

Plan for about 1.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Montreal is not rushed.

    Is Haunted Downtown worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 63 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.5/5 across 13 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Montreal, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Haunted Downtown?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Haunted Downtown suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 1.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Haunted Downtown?

    +

Around 5 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Montreal can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Montreal and add a light layer if any part of the 1.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Haunted Downtown start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Montreal within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Montreal?

    +

On Outty we rank every Montreal experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Old Montreal Walking Tour | Small Group (Max 10) | by MTL Detours, The Original Montreal Mural Arts Tour by Spade & Palacio, Montreal Mile End Food Tour with Bagel, Poutine and 7 Tastings. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Montreal?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Montreal?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.

What is included in Haunted Downtown?
