    Great Mapo Tofu Cooking Experience

We booked the Mapo Tofu Cooking Class pretty spontaneously and we are so happy that we did. Everything was organised very well. Even though it rained super heavy when we arrived it was no problem. Our guide Lance waited for us at the metro station and even ordered a taxi so we get to the market dry. First we visited a local market that is not one of the typical tourist attractions. Our guide was really knowledgable and helped us buying local spices. Before the class we were offered some tea and small snacks and then the class started. It was a lot of fun. We not only learned about the history of Mapo Tofu but about Tofu making in general. We even used a traditional press to make our own soy milk and learned everything from scratch. In the end we actually cooked our own Mapo Tofu and eat it with some other dishes together with Lance. We also had the time to share some stories and learn more about Chengdu. Thanks again to the whole team and especially our guide Lance who made this a great afternoon. We will definietly try and make Mapo Tofu at home.

    Great local cooking experience!

It was a very cool experience! Jerry, the tour guide, was very helpful throughout the experience, even before the activity had started. Before the experience had even begun, he reached out to clarify the different workshops that Chilli Uncool had. I eventually changed to the workshop he suggested, "Half-day Chengdu Handmade Tofu Making and Mapo Tofu Cooking Class." We started off the tour with cultural insight of people’s day to day lives than we arrived at the market. Jerry was able to go through the items are specific to the region. We went to the Chilli Uncool office. It had a very homey feel. The ah yi (aunt) already prepped all the things we need to make tofu and cook. While we were settling in, Jerry showed me step by step on how to make their region’s wonton. I was able to make some too! Afterwards, we started to ground the beans by using a stone mortar. The ah yi and Jerry provided lots of details and modeling for the process. We taste tested everything along the process…like soy milk and tofu soup with ah yi handmade sauce. At the end, we made tofu! While the tofu was being solidfied, we cooked mapo tofu with everything prepped already! It was awesome. The ah yi made a few other dishes and explained differences between each region. At the end, we had a great meal of the mapo tofu I made and the other dishes ah yi made too. Jerry was a great conversationalist and very knowledgeable.

Response from the operator: Dear Friend, Thank you for diving deep into Sichuan’s food culture with us today! The local market wasn’t just shopping – it was a journey into the heart of Sichuan’s flavors, and you embraced it beautifully. Then turning those fresh ingredients into delicious dishes? Pure magic! We’ve attached the recipe booklet and a list of the market vendors we visited. Revisit the tastes and share your stories with us! Gratefully, Lance Chilli Cool Sichuan Cultural Eats

    Best Mapo Tofu

100% Recommend this class. We were met at the station by Jerry and taken to a local food market. The food Market was an experience in its self and we ended up picking up some spices to take back home with us. After the Market Jerry took us to where we would be learning to make Mapo Tofu. There we met Leon who was our chef teacher for the morning. both Jerry and Leon were very knowledgeable and were able to answer all our questions. Leon was a very good teach and made it very easy to learn. Our Mapo tofu tasted amazing and I will definitly be making this at home.

Response from the operator: Dear Guest, Thank you for joining our Interactive Mapo tofu Workshop! We hope you had a great time exploring the market and learning hands-on cooking skills. Tag @ChilliCoolChina in your food photos! It was a pleasure having you with us, and we'd love to see you again in future sessions. Warmly, Lance Chilli Cool Team

Half-Day Professional Mapo Tofu Cooking with a Local Market Visit: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Chengdu.

How much does Half-Day Professional Mapo Tofu Cooking with a Local Market Visit cost?

    +

Prices start at $69 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Chengdu usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Half-Day Professional Mapo Tofu Cooking with a Local Market Visit take?

    +

Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Chengdu is not rushed.

Is Half-Day Professional Mapo Tofu Cooking with a Local Market Visit worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 73 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 20 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Chengdu, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Half-Day Professional Mapo Tofu Cooking with a Local Market Visit?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Half-Day Professional Mapo Tofu Cooking with a Local Market Visit suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Half-Day Professional Mapo Tofu Cooking with a Local Market Visit?

    +

Around 7 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Chengdu can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Chengdu and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Half-Day Professional Mapo Tofu Cooking with a Local Market Visit start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Chengdu within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Chengdu?

    +

On Outty we rank every Chengdu experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Chengdu Cooking Class with a Local Market Visit, Private Chengdu Day Tour: Giant Pandas and Jinsha Site Museum, Tuktuk Food Tour Through Chengdu's Local Eats. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Chengdu?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Chengdu?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
