    About this experience

The Great Salt Lake is home to millions of breeding waterbirds, and hosts even more during migration offering a unique look at birdlife unlike anywhere else in states. No visit to Utah is complete without a visit to the lake—“Americas Dead Sea”. Our Great Salt Lake Birding and Nature Tour is a perfect opportunity to visit the Great Salt Lake and learn about the Flora and Fauna of this wonder of the world.

    What you'll see and do

    1. Great Salt Lake

It goes without saying, that any visit to Utah isn't complete with going to the Great Salt Lake. By and far the most requested destination for birders visiting Utah, we have come up with a few options to give any birder a nice introduction to the lake. The lake is the largest remnant of Lake Bonneville, a prehistoric pluvial lake that once covered much of western Utah. In terms of surface area, it is the largest lake in the United States that is not one of the Great Lakes.

    2. Antelope Island State Park

No matter the time of year, we always start things off by visiting the actual lake via the Antelope Island Causway. Despite record low water levels the past few years the causeway still provides a great intro to the birds of the Great Salt Lake. Year-round we will see the Utah State Bird--the California Gull--ask us about the history and we'll happily share the story of this unique state bird! Moving on to the island we'll spend some time looking for American Bison, Pronghorn, Coyote, Burrowing Owl, and Great Horned Owl among other species!

120 minutes here · Admission included

    3. Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area

Here where freshwater meets salt, the brackish areas create an incredible abundance of food, and in turn an increidble number of bird speceis. In the winter Bald Eagles congregate here along wiht gulls, and numerous species of waterfowl. During migration 50-60 species of birds can be seen in a rather short period of time as waterbirds, shorebirds, waterfowl, waders, and divers fuel up on their wasy north and south. In the summer, breeders like Clark's Grebe, Western Grebe, Sandhill Crane, Common Yellowthroat, and Virginia Rail are all possible. If you only have a few hours to go birding and want a taste of what the lake has to offer, this excursion is a perfect way to get acquainted.

    Great

Because I had booked my hotel per Pitta's recommendation, I was picked up the night of our Flammulated Owl tour at the hotel right on time. Tim Avery is very easy to go with and talk to and extremely knowledgable on all things birds. We learned a lot in between spots. The night was a bit windy making vocalization difficult to hear, but Tim found a relatively calm area and voila - the Flammy came out. There was a little perserverance involved but ultimately we not only heard the owl, but were able to get photographs as well which was beyond expectations. All in all it was a great experience.

    Birding day in SLC

My guide, Quincy, was wonderful; he arrived right on time to pick me up at my hotel. He is an experienced guide with extensive knowledge of bird habitats. He took me to two locations where I thoroughly enjoyed birdwatching, and later—at my request—he dropped me off at the Aviary, which he happily did.

    Great morning of birding!

We had a wonderful morning of great birding with Pitta Tours. Our guide was professional, knowledgeable and a ton of fun. As we had no transportation, we were even picked up at our hotel. I am hoping to travel back to the area in the future and will certainly book another trip with Pitta!

Wonderul experience , would highly recommend!

We took a two-day, one evening (owling) birding tour with Pitta tours. Quinn was our guide. He was excellent! Quinn was very nice and very knowledgeable. We went as a group, two birders and two first-timers. We got 131 species in two days. It was an absolute pleasure, and we would highly recommend Quinn, Tim and Pitta tours!

    Quinn is a great guide!

I would highly recommend a birding outing with this company. I spent 6 hours with Quinn and loved every minute of it. Even in March the diversity of birds was fantastic. I saw 22 new species in one half day! Quinn is super professional and knowledgeable and just a sweet heart of a guy. Worth the money spent for sure!

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for the review! We love having Quinn at Pitta and are glad you enjoyed your time with him in the field!

Great Salt Lake Birding and Nature Adventure: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Salt Lake City.

How much does Great Salt Lake Birding and Nature Adventure cost?

    +

Prices start at $199 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Salt Lake City usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Great Salt Lake Birding and Nature Adventure take?

    +

Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Salt Lake City is not rushed.

Is Great Salt Lake Birding and Nature Adventure worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 54 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 5 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Salt Lake City, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Great Salt Lake Birding and Nature Adventure?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Great Salt Lake Birding and Nature Adventure suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Great Salt Lake Birding and Nature Adventure?

    +

Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Salt Lake City can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Salt Lake City and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Great Salt Lake Birding and Nature Adventure start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Salt Lake City within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Salt Lake City?

    +

Salt Lake City is a basecamp: Big and Little Cottonwood canyon hikes and ski shuttles, Antelope Island and Great Salt Lake trips, Park City transfers and Temple Square walking tours. Winter transfer reliability is the single biggest quality signal here. On Outty we rank every Salt Lake City experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Salt Lake City Guided Bus Tour, Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square & Salt Lake City Bus Tour, Great Salt Lake Safari - Discover Antelope Island. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Salt Lake City?

    +

December to March for skiing, June to September for canyon hiking. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Salt Lake City?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
