Many other kings added to it later and by the 11th century, the caves had become a major religious centre. King Nissankamalla gilded the caves and added about 70 Buddha statues in 1190 AD. King Kasyapa (477-495 AD) illegally took the throne. The legal heir of the throne Maggallana was forced to escape to India. Fearing an attack by his brother Kasyapa decided to move the capital from Anuradhapura to the central parts of Sri Lanka. He constructed a royal palace on a high rock to make sure it will not be invaded by the right heir of the throne Maggallana. The palace – Sigiriya was constructed using the most advanced technologies of the time and was richly decorated with colorful frescos.

Perfect Family Tour with Asia Lanka Travels & Gayan Gamage. Highly Recommended!

We just returned from a 9-day round trip in Sri Lanka with Gayan, and we can confidently say it was one of the best travel experiences we’ve ever had, all thanks to Gayan Gamage, our amazing guide and driver. From the very beginning, Gayan impressed us with his kindness, cheerful attitude, and absolute professionalism. He was always punctual, extremely knowledgeable, and went far beyond our expectations every single day. His positive energy and warm personality instantly made us feel at ease, and his personal care turned our trip into something truly special. Whether it was suggesting hidden gems off the beaten path, customizing plans to suit our family’s preferences, or ensuring every little detail, Gayan made it all happen effortlessly. He even had a fantastic way of connecting with our kids, keeping them entertained and engaged throughout the journey. Traveling with Gayan felt less like being with a tour guide and more like being with a trusted friend. He made sure we experienced the true spirit of Sri Lanka, and we’ll always be grateful for the memories he helped create. If you’re planning to explore Sri Lanka, we highly recommend Gayan and Asia Lanka Travels. You’ll be in the best hands!

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Negombo?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
