Good tour with great tour guide

Picked up in mini van just before 9am for a tour of the West of Madeira Island. Location for pick-up had been changed by the tour operator, and we had been sent the revised location, with a link to a map. Transpired that the pick up point was actually about 200m away, and felt lucky that we hadn’t missed the trip departure. Stopped off a few more times to collect others en route. All went smoothly. Van not air conditioned so a little too warm at times, but open windows kept the air moving. The places we visited were mostly interesting and enjoyable to see. We were unable to visit one of the scheduled stops with small waterfalls due to rock falls. Camara de Lobos, or Churchill’s Bay was very pretty and there was a festival of some kind at the time of our visit. We were able to sit within a cast statue of Winston C., painting, for a photo. The view point was amazing. It cost 5 Euros per person, payable at a ticket vending machine by card. NB The toilets here require a cash payment of 50 cents which had some cashless people crossing their legs! Come prepared. The natural pools were great to experience. Some, to the left of Porto Moniz are commercially operated with extensive fact, but quite crowded when we visited. A little further along the coast to the East were other pools without the same facilities such as changing rooms. These looked more appealing and less crowded and had we seen these first we’d have had a swim. Swim shoes annd a changing robe or towel are a good idea for this area. We had lunch at the cafe recommended by the tour guide in Porto Moniz, which we enjoyed and considered good value. The places we visited high up on the island were not to be missed. Amazing scenery and views, and areas we’d like to re-visit and explore more in future. We hadn’t been sure what the temperature would be like as we’d read reports that it could be quite cool high up in the mountains. The temperature did drop to around 17 degrees C, but we were very glad of the cool air at that point and didn’t need the extra layer of clothing we’d taken with us. Tour guide was top notch. Multi lingual, and very knowledgeable of the island. His commentary along the way was very well rehearsed, and timing right on point every time. Some of the roads were extremely tricky, being narrow, twisty, very steep, congested in places, and with sheer drops off the side of the road on very high mountains. However, Joel (?) was brilliant at negotiating the terrain and traffic. I’m quite a cautious driver, and nervous passenger. Although I’d rather the highway speeds had been a little less hurried at times, I felt overall very reassured and comfortable throughout. Really pleased we did this day long tour, finishing just after 5pm. Great value, and we plan to do their East of Madeira tour on a future visit.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a detailed review of your West Madeira tour with us. We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed the day and found it to be great value. We’re sorry for the confusion regarding the revised pick-up point. Although the updated location had been sent to you, we appreciate that a difference of around 200 metres can be stressful when you’re waiting for a tour to depart, and we’ll certainly take your comments on board. We’re also pleased that you enjoyed the many highlights of the tour, from Câmara de Lobos and the spectacular mountain scenery to the natural pools at Porto Moniz. Unfortunately, the rockfalls meant that we couldn’t visit one of the scheduled waterfall stops, but we’re glad that the alternative experiences still made for an enjoyable day. Thank you especially for your kind words about our guide and driver. We’re very proud of our team, and it’s wonderful to know that you felt comfortable and reassured throughout the journey, particularly on Madeira’s challenging mountain roads. We’ll be sure to pass your compliments on to Joel and the team. Your practical tips about swim shoes, towels and having some cash for facilities will hopefully be useful to future visitors too! It would be a pleasure to welcome you back to Madeira for our East tour on your next visit. We look forward to showing you even more of this beautiful island. Thank you again for choosing us and for sharing your experience!

    Fantastic day

The trip gave us a really good snapshot of the western side of Madeira with plenty of stops and opportunities to see various points and places of interest. This was backed up by the knowledge of our driver Chris, who was excellent, giving us commentary throughout the day on the places we visited as well as general information about the island and the way of life there. We would thoroughly recommend this trip and it was great value for money too in our opinion.

    Great trip

We enjoyed this trip very much. Benjamin was our guide and he was very professional and delivered the commentary in both English and German. He drove carefully and gave us useful information at each stop, such as where we could find toilets and refreshments. We thought the west of the island was beautiful although very crowded at times.

    Enjoyable trip

Good to see this part of the island. Friendly and informative guide and safe driving. Personally, would have liked more time in Fanal and less in Porto Moniz but its difficult to please everyone. Minivan is tight and very warm.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your review and for joining us on the tour! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed seeing this part of the island and that you found the guide friendly, informative, and the driving safe. We appreciate your feedback regarding the time spent at Fanal and Porto Moniz. Balancing the itinerary to suit the different interests and expectations of all guests can be challenging, but comments like yours help us continue to improve the experience. We're also sorry to hear that you found the minivan a little tight and warm. We will take your observations into consideration as we work to enhance our guests' comfort. Thank you again for travelling with us, and we hope to welcome you back to Madeira in the future!

Full Day West Madeira Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Funchal.

How much does Full Day West Madeira Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $47 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Funchal usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Full Day West Madeira Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Funchal is not rushed.

Is Full Day West Madeira Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 65 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.3/5 across 58 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Funchal, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Full Day West Madeira Tour?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Full Day West Madeira Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Full Day West Madeira Tour?

    +

Around 20 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Funchal can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Funchal and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Full Day West Madeira Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Funchal within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Funchal?

    +

On Outty we rank every Funchal experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Jeep Tour Amazing West to Natural Pools -Full-Day, Porto Moniz, Seixal, Fanal Forest, Cliff Skywalk in Open Roof 4X4, West Tour-Fanal Forest & Porto Moniz Natural Pools Small Groups. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Funchal?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Funchal?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
