What you'll see and do

  1. Mt. Takao

Mt. Takao is the most popular climbing spot in the Kanto area, located about 50 kilometers west of the city center. It is a wonderful mountain that was included in the Michelin Green Guide Japan in 2007, along with Mt. Fuji. Part of the Meiji no Mori Takao Quasi-National Park, it offers leisurely mountain hiking suitable even for a day trip. The mountain has been especially important to the Japanese since 744, when Emperor Shomu commanded the creation of Yakushiji, a famous temple, encouraging followers to visit. Known as one of Tokyo's best viewpoints, the observation deck offers a panoramic view of the Kanto Plain, with skyscrapers in the distance. Escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a rejuvenating day where you can connect with nature in a spiritual setting.

  2. Takaosan Yakuo-in Yuki-ji Temple

Mt.Takao is considered a sacred mountain and has been a place of worship for over 1000 years. On the way up the mountain you'll pass through the Yakuo-in Temple where you can pray to Shinto-Buddhist mountain gods (tengu) for good fortune.

  3. Mt. Takaosan Hiking Course

The trails range in difficulty from easy to serious hiker so let your guide know what you prefer. On the way up, the guide will offer explanations of the wildlife you encounter, the views and the Budhhist and Shinto shrines and statues you'll see along the way. At any point along the trail you can stop for a breather, or to have a snack and a drink.

  4. Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu

Descend the mountain either on foot or by cable car or chairlift (the chairlift has no safety bar so be prepared to hold on tightly!). Then ease your tired muscles in a relaxing hot spring. Experience seasonal pools such as the pink "sakura bath", as well as several outdoor hot pools. If you have time after the onsen, the guide will show you around the town. You can see all the nostalgic old shops. Please note that the person with tattoos are not allowed to bathe in the hot springs.

Takao isn't particularly tall, however it is filled with abundant flora and fauna and covered in hiking trails, both accessible concreted trails and wild dirt tracks far off the beaten path. First you will walk to the Takao 599 Museum where you can learn about the plants and animals that inhabit this mountain. A great day out

I had a really lovely day; it was a busy day, as it was a public holiday, but the weather was perfect so we had a spectacular view of Mount Fuji, from the summit of Mount Takosan. Keita, my guide was very friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating; we went to the monkey park instead of the Onsen, and he took me to the fire ceremony in the temple. Thank you for a wonderful experience!

Response from the operator: Dear valued guest, Thank you very much for your kind review! We’re delighted to hear that you had such a lovely day on Mt. Takao with Keita, and that his friendly guidance and flexibility helped make the experience memorable despite the holiday crowds. We truly appreciate your feedback, and we hope to welcome you back to Japan again in the future! Best regards, Kyoko

Customized hiking tour

Yuki was an excellent hike guide. She tailored the hike to our preferences (slightly harder route), and taught us a lot about the flora, Japanese religions, culture and customs along the way. Would recommend to anyone, as the hike can also be made easier with different route choices.

Response from the operator: Dear Marcelo, Thank you very much for your kind review! We’re delighted to hear that Yuki tailored the Mt. Takao hike to your preferences and that her knowledge made the experience even more enjoyable. We sincerely appreciate the recommendation and hope to see you back for more tours in the future! Best regards, Kyoko

Full Day Hiking Tour at Mt.Takao including Hot Spring: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Tokyo.

How much does Full Day Hiking Tour at Mt.Takao including Hot Spring cost?

+

Prices start at $11000 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Tokyo usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Full Day Hiking Tour at Mt.Takao including Hot Spring take?

+

Plan for about 5.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Tokyo is not rushed.

Is Full Day Hiking Tour at Mt.Takao including Hot Spring worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 75 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 59 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Tokyo, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Full Day Hiking Tour at Mt.Takao including Hot Spring?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Full Day Hiking Tour at Mt.Takao including Hot Spring suitable for kids and families?

+

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Full Day Hiking Tour at Mt.Takao including Hot Spring?

+

Around 21 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Tokyo can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Tokyo and add a light layer if any part of the 5.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Full Day Hiking Tour at Mt.Takao including Hot Spring start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Tokyo within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Tokyo?

+

Tokyo is less a city than a stack of neighborhoods with completely different opening hours. A guided food crawl through Shinjuku's Omoide Yokocho gets you past the no-tourist curtains, while the day trips west to Hakone and Fuji need an early start to be worth the fare. Our ranking weighs guide quality heavily here, because in Tokyo the guide is the product. On Outty we rank every Tokyo experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Tokyo Shinjuku Chopsticks Making Class, Tokyo : Asakusa Chopsticks Making Class, Shinjuku Night Food and Bar Crawl. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Tokyo?

+

Late March to May for blossom, October to November for clear Fuji views. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Tokyo?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
