Bo-Kaap’s -formerly known as the Malay Quarter-, dates back to the 1760's, when numerous rental houses “huurhuisjes”; were built and leased to slaves brought from Malaysia, Indonesia and the rest of Africa to work in the Cape. It is a mix of Cape Dutch and Georgian Architecture. Houses were later repainted with bright colors by their owners as an expression of their freedom! Jean Marie knows his way around and has a wonderful lovable way of imparting his excellent local knowledge.
