“Cape Town: A Beautiful City with a Harsh Welcome for Motorcyclists

I am 65 and retired and I have been riding motorcycles for over 50 years across Southern Africa, Europe, and Asia, and I don’t say this lightly — my experiences with traffic police in Cape Town and the Western Cape have been the most unpleasant I’ve encountered anywhere. On this particular trip, I was riding over Sir Lowry’s Pass toward Grabouw when traffic came to a near standstill due to a truck being towed across the road. It was extremely hot (well over 30°C), and like many motorcyclists, I filtered slowly through the traffic at low speed. Most drivers were courteous and moved aside to let me pass — even a traffic officer did the same. At one point, with no oncoming traffic, I briefly crossed the white line at very low speed (around 30 km/h) to pass stationary vehicles. Shortly thereafter, the same traffic officer pursued me aggressively with blue lights, nearly colliding with the tow truck driver in the process. Despite the situation being controlled and non-reckless, I was issued fines totalling R3,000 for two offences. A few days later, during a major event in Sea Point/Green Point, traffic congestion was again severe. As is common practice for motorcycles worldwide, I carefully filtered between lanes to ease congestion. At an intersection, a traffic officer refused to allow me to turn right, insisting I was in the wrong lane — despite being positioned between lanes due to the gridlock — and instructed me to continue, make a U-turn, and return. This felt unnecessary and obstructive rather than helpful. What stands out most is not strict enforcement, but what feels like a consistent lack of understanding — and at times hostility — toward motorcyclists. I’ve ridden extensively in every province in South Africa, and the difference is stark. In many other regions, traffic officers are pragmatic, professional, frienfly and accommodating to motorcycles in any conditions. Sadly, that has not been my experience in Cape Town. Cape Town offers some of the most spectacular riding roads in the world, but based on multiple experiences, I would seriously reconsider returning here with a motorcycle. My riding groups are already discussing alternative destinations like the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, where the overall experience has been far more positive and pleasant.

Best decision I have ever made!

We had a 4 day private tour in Cape Town with Lizl, an associate of Clive's. It was a pleasant, informative wonderful time together with the professional and the person. Lizl is very knowledgeable, attentive for our interests and needs. She could make the best of our time and extremely respectful with everybody. A really wonderful time when we could know the best of Cape Town on our own rhythm and style, certain that we would enjoy everything. Would do it again and again!!

Full-Day Cape Town Private Tour for events with a Licensed Guide: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Cape Town.

How much does Full-Day Cape Town Private Tour for events with a Licensed Guide cost?

    +

Prices start at $700 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Cape Town usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Full-Day Cape Town Private Tour for events with a Licensed Guide take?

    +

Plan for about 7 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Cape Town is not rushed.

Is Full-Day Cape Town Private Tour for events with a Licensed Guide worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 47 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3/5 across 2 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Cape Town, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Full-Day Cape Town Private Tour for events with a Licensed Guide?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Full-Day Cape Town Private Tour for events with a Licensed Guide suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 7-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Full-Day Cape Town Private Tour for events with a Licensed Guide?

    +

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cape Town can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Cape Town and add a light layer if any part of the 7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Full-Day Cape Town Private Tour for events with a Licensed Guide start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Cape Town within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Cape Town?

    +

On Outty we rank every Cape Town experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Cape Town: Lion's Head Sunrise/Sunset Hike, Ocean Wildlife Encounter in Cape Town, Private Full Day Stellenbosch Wine Tour with Pick Up and Drop Off. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Cape Town?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Cape Town?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
