Lukomir
Lukomir is Bosnia’s highest and most isolated mountain village. Lukomir is like a living ethnological museum, where the customs of nomadic tribes and Dinaric highlanders are still practiced. It is interesting for its unique stone houses with cherry-wood roof tiles. Indeed, access to the village is impossible from the first snows in December until late April and sometimes even later, except by skis or on foot. A newly constructed lodge is now complete to receive guests. From there, you can do some magnificent hiking in the area along the ridge of the Rakitnica Canyon.

Rakitnica canyon
Our hiking to Lukomir is taking place on the edge of Rakitnica canyon. Rakitnica River, one of the largest tributaries of the deep Neretva River, has carved a largely inaccessible, 26-kilometer-long and incredibly beautiful canyon between Bjelašnica and Visočica Mountains. Rakitnica Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in Europe and this truly natural wonder is only 30 kilometers from Sarajevo. The canyon's headwaters are found at 1,120 meters above sea level and the confluence of the Rakitnica and Neretva is at 320 meters above sea level. Thanks to its unique beauty and inaccessibility, Rakitnica Canyon serves as a true challenge for mountaineers, rafters, fishermen and everyone else who loves wild and untouched nature.

The hike itself was...
The hike itself was beautiful and there were no issues with the logistics. However, there wasn't a lot of explanation from the guide on the area (flora, fauna, any historical significance, etc) and surrounding mountains as well the village we visited. Once arriving at the village, it felt a bit touristy. The lunch spot was tasty (note that food and drink are not covered by the tour) and there is time to explore the village and hike up to a beautiful lookout point.

A wonderful experience!
My friend and I had a wonderful experience on the hike, and it was one of our favourite days in Bosnia! The hike was nice and easy with a good pace. The views were breathtaking and the village was a real highlight. We enjoyed the lunch and buying knitted goods from the locals, who were incredibly warm and welcoming. Our tourguide Adis was very helpful and shared lots of interesting stories. Lastly the company of the tour group made the trip very enjoyable. My only minor point of improvement is that it would have been nice for the lunch to be included in the original price of the booking. But overall, we would definitely recommend this hike to anyone visiting Sarajevo! Thank you so much for an unforgettable experience.

Breathtaking Trek to Lukomir Village
We went as a family of 8. Mum, Dad and 6 grown children aged between 16-22. Our guide was Shaheen. Communication was great and we were collected from our apartment. We then met with another guide, Ahmad who had another 10 people as part of the group trek. Although we often hike in the UK, this trek was something else. The views are absolutely breathtaking. The children all kept up with the group really well but mum and dad struggled to keep up as there is quite a lot of uphill walking that is very strenuous. Shaheen was very patient and often came back for moral support and to guide us back to the group. The traditional Bosnian lunch at the village at the top was lovely & the platter of food was perfect - a chance to try different bosnian foods. There is also a toilet (squat) outside the restaurant. There is also a village masjid to pray at. Over all a really wonderful experience and a highlight of our stay in Sarajevo. A special thanks to Shaheen for his patience and interesting conversations. We truly slept like babies that night 😂

Lukomir Village Hike 5 July 2026
The tour was fantastic!! Kudos and many thanks to our wonderful guide Ahmed!! He was is outgoing and helpful as our driver and guide, giving lots of insight, advice and recommendations throughout the hike! He kept us safe throughout and I truly appreciate his passion for the outdoors! The locals at Lukomir Village are also the sweetest and kindest people! Hopefully I will get visit that beautiful village again one day :) Do send my salam and best regards to Ahmed and the whole Hello Bosnia tours team! once again, fantastic and 100/10 highly recommended!!
