Nihonbashi
Starting in Nihonbashi, in the past, we will look at key ingredients and flavours that underpin Japanese food. We will learn about Dashi, the stock that forms the base of many Japanese dishes. We will focus in on two key ingredients; Katsuobushi and Kelp. From there we will enjoy some traditional Japanese snacks that have been eaten for generations. Satsuma-age (fried fish cake), Amazake (a healthy fermented rice drink), Imo Kenpi (sweet potato chips) and Daifuku (glutinous rice mochi with a sweet filling). All of the shops that we have chosen have been carefully curated. All are over 100 years old, several date back to the Edo period itself!

Tokyo Food Tour
My family of six (including teenagers) had an outstanding experience with a Past, Present & Future Tokyo Food Tours at the end of June, and it was the perfect way to begin our family's Japan adventure. Our guide, Miko, was absolutely amazing! She was punctual, professional, incredibly knowledgeable, and made the entire day enjoyable for our family. Beyond introducing us to delicious local food, she shared fascinating insights into Japanese culture, history, and everyday life, making each stop even more meaningful. We visited five different locations, enjoyed several special treats we never would have found on our own, explored a beautiful shrine, and even stopped at one of Tokyo's major department stores. Miko also pointed out many important landmarks and places of interest throughout the city, giving us a wonderful introduction to Tokyo. One thing that made the tour especially memorable was Miko's thoughtfulness. She took countless family photos throughout the day, allowing all of us to be in the pictures together. She also patiently helped us understand Tokyo's mass transit system, which gave us the confidence to navigate the city on our own for the rest of our trip. If you're visiting Tokyo for the first time—or even if you've been before—we highly recommend this tour. It was informative, delicious, well-organized, and genuinely fun. Thank you, Miko, for making our first day in Tokyo so memorable. It was one of the highlights of our entire Japan vacation!
Response from the operator: Hi Char, thank you so much for your incredible and detailed review! We're delighted to hear your family had such a memorable start to your Japan adventure with Miko. She'll be so happy to know her knowledge, thoughtful touches, and enthusiasm made the day so special - from the delicious food to helping you navigate Tokyo with confidence. We truly appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you and your family back to Japan again in the future!

Flavours of Tokyo
Very well organized tour that introduced us to three parts of the city we may not have gone to otherwise. History and culture were weaved into the discussion, and the stops were well paced. In addition, you got to have both full meals as well as tastings that introduced you to the nuances of how food is prepared and flavored in Japan.

We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed exploring different parts of the city and discovering places you may not have visited otherwise. It’s wonderful to know that you appreciated the pacing of the tour as well as the variety of meals and tastings throughout the experience. Japanese cuisine has so many subtle flavors and preparation styles, so we’re very happy that the tour helped introduce you to those unique nuances. Thank you again for joining us and for taking the time to share your experience. We truly appreciate your kind words and hope to welcome you back again on a future visit to Japan!

An excellent food and cultural tour
Keiko met as at our hotel and guided us through Tokyo and the metro system. We had so many stops, trying a wide range of food, from many different vendors. Keiko gave us background information on the history of Japan and the changes in Japanese cuisine. It was so interesting, and we loved being in various restaurants and walking through the busy streets and shops. Even though we covered a great distance, it was at a relaxed pace and we had some lovely conversations. It felt like a good friend was showing us around Tokyo, and delighting us with many treats. Highly recommend!
Response from the operator: Hello! Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We’re delighted to hear that you had such an enjoyable experience with Keiko. It’s great to know you loved exploring Tokyo, trying a wide variety of foods, and learning about Japan’s history and cuisine along the way. We’re especially happy that the tour felt relaxed and personal—like being shown around by a friend. We’ll be sure to share your kind words with Keiko—she’ll be very happy to hear them. Thank you for your recommendation, and we hope to welcome you again on another tour in the future!

Why this scores 73
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Flavours of Tokyo: A Journey Through Time - Private Food Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Tokyo.
How much does Flavours of Tokyo: A Journey Through Time - Private Food Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $59 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Tokyo usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Flavours of Tokyo: A Journey Through Time - Private Food Tour take?
+
Plan for about 5.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Tokyo is not rushed.
Is Flavours of Tokyo: A Journey Through Time - Private Food Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 73 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 51 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable food & drink in Tokyo, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Flavours of Tokyo: A Journey Through Time - Private Food Tour?
+
No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.
Is Flavours of Tokyo: A Journey Through Time - Private Food Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Flavours of Tokyo: A Journey Through Time - Private Food Tour?
+
Around 18 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Tokyo can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Tokyo and add a light layer if any part of the 5.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Flavours of Tokyo: A Journey Through Time - Private Food Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Tokyo within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Tokyo?
+
Tokyo is less a city than a stack of neighborhoods with completely different opening hours. A guided food crawl through Shinjuku's Omoide Yokocho gets you past the no-tourist curtains, while the day trips west to Hakone and Fuji need an early start to be worth the fare. Our ranking weighs guide quality heavily here, because in Tokyo the guide is the product. On Outty we rank every Tokyo experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Tokyo Shinjuku Chopsticks Making Class, Tokyo : Asakusa Chopsticks Making Class, Shinjuku Night Food and Bar Crawl. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Tokyo?
+
Late March to May for blossom, October to November for clear Fuji views. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Tokyo?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
