The Grachtengordel (known in English as the Canal District) is a neighborhood in Amsterdam, Netherlands located in the Centrum district. The seventeenth-century canals of Amsterdam, located in the center of Amsterdam, were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in August 2010.[1] The Amsterdam Canal District consists of the area around the city’s four main canals: the Singel, the Herengracht, the Keizersgracht, and the Prinsengracht. From the Brouwersgracht, the canals are generally parallel with one another, leading gradually southeast into the Amstel river. Many of the canal houses in the Amsterdam Canal District are from the Dutch Golden Age, 17th century. Many of these buildings, however, underwent restoration or reconstruction in various centuries, meaning that these building display many different architectural styles and facades

Westerkerk
The Westerkerk was built between 1620 and 1631 in Renaissance style according to designs by architect Hendrick de Keyser (1565-1621). He is buried in the church he designed earlier: the 'Zuiderkerk'. The building of the Westerkerk was finished and completed by his son Pieter de Keyser (1595-1676) and inaugurated on June 8, 1631. The church has a length of 58 meters and a width of 29 meters. The high nave is flanked by the two lower aisles. The three-aisled basilica has a rectangular plan with two transepts of equal dimensions. As a result, the plan for this church was given the form of two Greek crosses connected with each other.

The famous skinny bridge across the river Amstel and opposite of the Carré theatre, is an Old Dutch design wooden bridge known as a double-swipe (balanced) bridge. Tradition relates that the bridge was named after the sisters Mager, who were supposed to live on opposite sides of the river. They are said to have had the wooden bridge built to make it easier to visit one another. However it appears more likely, that the original bridge acquired the name from being so narrow (mager means skinny in Dutch), that it was hard for two pedestrians to pass one along another.

A delightful evening cruise
I assumed this was a cruise with a server bringing around wine and cheese. It was not. We were handed a small paper bag with a bottle of wine of our choice (white, red, or rose), a small bag of nuts, and a small container of cheese cubes. But the tour itself was nice and delightful. The accompanying audio was just the right amount. After having also done a one-hour, daytime canal cruise, I much preferred this slightly longer evening cruise.

Okay but not spectacular
A relaxing ride on the canal. Only okay views on our particular route. The wine and cheese is put together as a “box lunch” that you have to know to pick up at the ticket office. No real instructions anywhere. We sat across from friends at a table. Seats were not very comfortable, but the ride was short enough. There may be other options that are more enjoyable.

We chose this trip as it was a covered saloon boat because of the possibility of rain which it unfortunately did, happy we were dry. This wine and cheese option included a bottle of wine and a great selection of three types of local cheese. The cruise was great we enjoyed it, seeing the city at night all lit up.

Great way to see Amsterdam!
Great way to see Amsterdam from the canals and to learn some history of the city. The tables are crammed in there and it was rising so no one had their windows opened and it got toasty. Having to sit made it hard to get pictures of the sites. Our boat driver added more to the tour and was a great guide!
