What you'll see and do
Northern Quarter
Kevin will guide you around this buzzing area where the city’s industrial past meets its creative present. Its streets are lined with 19th-century red-brick warehouses and former textile buildings, many of which once formed part of Manchester’s thriving cotton and manufacturing economy. Today, those buildings house independent cafés, bars, record shops, vintage stores, restaurants, galleries and creative businesses. The area became particularly associated with the city's music scene from the 1980s onwards. Places such as Afflecks became important gathering points for independent fashion, music and youth culture, while venues and record shops helped establish the Quarter's distinctive identity.

Salford Lads' Club
One of the most recognisable pilgrimage sites connected with Manchester’s musical heritage. Opened in 1904, the red-brick building was established as a club for local working-class boys, providing somewhere to meet, learn skills and take part in sport and recreation. Its original purpose makes it an important part of Salford’s social history — but for generations of music fans, its fame is inseparable from The Smiths. The building became immortalised on the gatefold of The Queen Is Dead, the band pictured outside, creating an image that has become one of the defining visual representations of the Smiths and of Manchester itself. Standing outside the distinctive red-brick building you have a direct connection with that photograph and with the city's alternative music history. The surrounding streets also provide a glimpse of the working-class urban landscape that forms an important part of Manchester and Salford's story.

The John Rylands Library
Far more than a beautiful Victorian building: it is one of Manchester’s great cultural and intellectual landmarks. Opened in 1900, the library was founded by Enriqueta Rylands in memory of her husband, Manchester industrialist and millionaire John Rylands. Its neo-Gothic interior was deliberately conceived to resemble a medieval church, creating the extraordinary atmosphere you can experience today. Its collections are internationally important, containing rare books, manuscripts, archives and religious texts spanning thousands of years. Among its treasures is a fragment of the Gospel of John, generally dated to the second century, making it one of the earliest surviving fragments of the New Testament. Another is the Manchester Odyssey, the earliest copy of Homer's epic, a cornerstone of Western Civilisation. The library also tells an important story about Manchester's transformation from an industrial powerhouse into a major centre of education, culture and scholarship

Castlefield Urban Heritage Park
Where Manchester’s Roman beginnings meet its industrial past and modern regeneration. It is one of the most atmospheric parts of the city, with canals, railway arches, red-brick warehouses, the world's oldest railway station and cobbled streets creating a distinctive sense of Manchester’s history. Added to this wonderful backdrop there is the natural ampitheatre of Castlefield Bowl, setting for concerts by New Order, Noel Gallagher, Jonny Marr and Elbow. Today, many of the surrounding warehouses and industrial buildings have been converted into bars, restaurants, apartments and cultural spaces, while the canals provide pleasant walking routes through the heart of the city. Castlefield offers a remarkable opportunity to see Roman Manchester, the Industrial Revolution, the birth of the canal system and the modern city all within a relatively small area.
