Maboneng Precinct
Maboneng meaning “Place of Light” is a fitting name for a district that has fast become a center of the creative energy for Johannesburg’s urban artists, designers and entrepreneurs. Only a few years ago, this inner-city neighborhood was largely viewed as a no-go zone due to urban decay. Today, as the result of plan to place art at the center of the revitalization efforts in Johannesburg, the now popular Maboneng cultural precinct is living up to name as the “Place Of Light” and drawing tourists from aroundthe world eager to be witness and be part of this transformation.

Nice Guide
They introduced us to various art. The view was also amazing from the 15th floor. Mr. Kaiser, our Guide, was a kind Guide.

Excellent afternoon “off the beaten (cycle) track”.
My wife and I booked the tour as we wanted to learn more about areas that are not normally considered to be “tourist destinations”. We were not disappointed. We got a greater understanding of the history and incredible street art of Maboneng while also discovering cool businesses and enterprises. Further away we learned more about the history and modern life in Troyeville and Jeppestown, while Victoria Yards was totally unexpected. Highly recommended if you are interested in doing “something different” in Johannesburg, albeit I must say the bicycles were not the best; the brakes on mine were barely functional. The longer-term success of the tour might be improved by cycles that are more obviously well maintained (perhaps we were unlucky with our bikes, and no harm was done) but no doubt at all about the energy, engagement and knowledge provided on the tour. Our excellent guide (I think his name was Sam, and it’s on me that I’m not certain more than a month later) certainly knew his stuff — and most importantly knew people out on the streets to bring the tour further to life. Really enjoyed our Sunday afternoon.

Amazing; a must do
I loved my cycle tour with Ayanda. As a solo female traveller it was just perfect. The tour was so informative and we covered so much ground, saw the most intriguing neighbourhoods and places, accentuated by Ayanda's extensive knowledge. I would highly recommend this tour as without it I would never have seen so many fascinating parts of Joburg through the eyes of someone who grew up in the east city. Thanks so much Ayanda!
Response from the operator: Hello Eliza! Thanks for taking the time to leave us some feedback. We appreciate your wonderful response to the tour. We are happy you had such an amazing time on the tour and do wish to host you again in the future :) Keep well and take care!

Why this scores 57
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
East City Cycle Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Johannesburg.
How much does East City Cycle Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $46 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Johannesburg usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does East City Cycle Tour take?
+
Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Johannesburg is not rushed.
Is East City Cycle Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 57 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 4 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Johannesburg, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule East City Cycle Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is East City Cycle Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book East City Cycle Tour?
+
Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Johannesburg can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Johannesburg and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does East City Cycle Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Johannesburg within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Johannesburg?
+
On Outty we rank every Johannesburg experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Soweto and Johannesburg Exclusive Full Day Guided Tour, Ultimate Johannesburg Soweto Experience with Apartheid Museum, Full Day Ultimate Pilanesberg National Park Safari from Johannesburg or Pretoria. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Johannesburg?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Johannesburg?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
What is included in East City Cycle Tour?
+
Included: Helmets; and Bicycle use. Not included: Lunch. Always check the voucher for the final list before you travel.
What languages is East City Cycle Tour offered in?
+
It runs in English. Pick your language when choosing a date and time, as not every departure runs in every language.

+

Is East City Cycle Tour wheelchair or stroller accessible?
+
The operator notes: Not recommended for pregnant travelers. If accessibility is critical, contact the operator after booking to confirm arrangements for your date.
