A misunderstanding turned into one of the best parts of our trip.
Originally, I had rented a jeep for the day for us to do some off roading. My husband was so excited because we live in NW Ohio and he had never had the opportunity to do anything like this. I got an email 2 days ago saying that the company had overbooked and our reservation was cancelled. I booked this half day tour after the cancellation, not realizing that it said YOUR OWN SUV or jeep. As in one that you own or rented separately. I spoke with Captain John and he offered to take us out in his Jeep. Part of the fun though was for my husband to do the driving. I started calling around and found what was probably the last Jeep rental in Moab on a Saturday. My husband was worried because we were spending 2x the money that we originally planned on by renting the jeep AND having a guide. We met up with Captain John at the rental place, swung by and got the kids from the hotel and we were on our way! We did the Fins and Things trail, which is a moderate to difficult trail. We were up, we were down, we were sideways. John did a great job of guiding and encouraging my husband on some of the more difficult parts. After our tour was over, my husband told me that spending the extra money on an experienced guide was the best money we spent on this trip because he never would have been confident enough to try a more difficult trail like that on his own. We even watched some other people in rentals approach the obstacles we had just went over and decide to go a different route. If we ever make is back out this way again, we would 100% book another tour with Captain John, only this time the longer full day tour with hike.
Response from the operator: Ah, yes. When plans go awry, the adventure begins! One of my favorite things is watching first time off road drivers emotions change from fear, to disbelief, to all smiles! So glad this worked out for you.

Knowledgeable guide
On our 1st vacation in Moab we brought our jeep and didn't know the area of where to go. By accident we ran into John with JG Outfitters that offered us his guide service. He asked our skill level and what we had in mind to do. He gave us a walkie talkie to communicate with him and off we went. We followed him through slick rock trails, sandy trails and rock climbing. He took us on short hikes with beautiful views. He was always patient and asked how we were doing. We went places we would have never gone and saw beauty that we would have missed in the Moab red rock back country trails. I would highly recommend JG Outfitters for his guide service while in Moab UT

Do it like a local! Drive a canyon in the comfort of your personal SUV!: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Moab.
How much does Do it like a local! Drive a canyon in the comfort of your personal SUV! cost?
+
Prices start at $385 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Moab usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Do it like a local! Drive a canyon in the comfort of your personal SUV! take?
+

Is Do it like a local! Drive a canyon in the comfort of your personal SUV! worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 49 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.3/5 across 4 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Moab, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Do it like a local! Drive a canyon in the comfort of your personal SUV!?
+

Is Do it like a local! Drive a canyon in the comfort of your personal SUV! suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Do it like a local! Drive a canyon in the comfort of your personal SUV!?
+
Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Moab can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Moab and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Do it like a local! Drive a canyon in the comfort of your personal SUV! start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Moab within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Moab?
+
Moab is the gateway to Arches and Canyonlands: sunrise arch tours, 4x4 runs on Hell's Revenge, Colorado River rafting, canyoneering and dark-sky stargazing. Park entry timing systems change often, so we weight tours that handle reservations for you. On Outty we rank every Moab experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include HIGHLY RATED U-DRIVE Moab Hell’s Revenge UTV Off-Road Adventure, BEST! Hell's Revenge U-Drive 4X4 Tour in Moab +Dinosaur Tracks!, 5-STAR Moab Hell's Revenge UTV U-DRIVE TOUR + DINO TRACKS. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Moab?
+
April to May and September to October, avoiding peak summer heat. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Moab?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
