Royal Palace
Depending on the location of your hotel, we commonly start with the visit the Royal Palace, which was built in 1866 by King Norodom. The Palace is actually a number of structures within a pagoda-style compound. The Silver Pagoda, located within the Royal Palace compound, is so names because of its floor, which is made up of 5,000 silver tiles. The treasures are a solid gold Buddha encrusted with 9, 584 diamonds and weighing 90 kilos and a small 17th century emerald and baccarat crystal Buddha.

Great, up to a point
We had booked a 4 hour tour as we had limited time in the city before flying home. Our guide was pleasant, very knowledgeable and fun. Because at no stage was the proposed itinerary shared with us in advance we were a little surprised to find out it comprised just of 2 venues - The Grand Palace and The National Museum. We asked if it was possible to see a market perhaps as well if we had time which our guide agreed to. All went fine until after 2.5 hours our guide announced, after we'd been to the 2 main venues, he couldn't stay any longer and sent us with the driver to the market and then back to our hotel. All a bit odd. No explanation for cutting short our trip. Whilst the tour cost in Europe wouldn't be considered expensive, by Cambodian standards it was pretty steep so we felt a bit disappointed.
