A warm and practical cooking class

I had a great experience cooking with Yin. I like to take cooking classes to help me understand the local culture and food. I've noticed that teachers tend to speak better than average English, and Yin is no exception: she meet all my expectations! Even before booking, the variety of diversity of dishes on the menu stood out for me. We cooked 4 out of a menu of over 20; all other classes I found focus on one or two dishes and offer a very short selection, if any at all. The class was very relaxed, Yin was very patient and her explanations in English were clear and practical. She showed me how to fill every dish and then I had the opportunity to cook the same dish myself. Best of all, I had to do no prep or cleaning! She made me feel very welcome in her studio. She also liked to share things about her life in China.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your thoughtful review! It was a pleasure cooking with you and sharing not only Chinese recipes, but also the stories and culture behind them. I'm especially happy that you enjoyed the variety of dishes we offer, as we hope every guest can find something that truly interests them. Creating a relaxed, hands-on experience where everyone feels welcome is always our goal. Thank you again for choosing Yin Studio, and we hope to cook together again on your next visit to Shanghai!

Delicious food, incredible host!

Really great experience! Yin clearly loves what she does, it showed in every aspect of the class. She sent a video with instructions on how to get to the location which was very helpful. The class started with a tour of a nearby market, where Yin showed us some of the ingredients we would be using. Once back at the studio she explained the recipes we would be making. We were a chatty group and Yin was great to talk to. The class was well structured and myself and my partner both left feeling as though we had learned things even though we were at different cooking skill levels. Yin helped where needed, explained everything thoroughly, and also made sure we did a lot of cooking ourselves. The four recipes we made were absolute hits and I will definitely be making them at home! We got to take some leftovers with us which was much appreciated! Yin also shared written versions of the recipes on Whatsapp with me afterwards. There was one other person in our class so we had a group of 3 which was a good size - it was great to meet and get to know someone else travelling China in such a warm, welcoming environment. I cooked with Yin and my partner cooked with the other class member which was a lot of fun. If you are looking for a fun afternoon in Shanghai where you can learn some Chinese cooking and eat your delicious creations this class is a great option and I would highly recommend it!

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful review! It was a pleasure welcoming you and your partner to Yin Studio. I'm delighted that you enjoyed everything from our local market visit to cooking each dish yourselves, and even more excited to hear that you'll be making the recipes again at home. Creating a relaxed and welcoming space where guests can cook, learn, and connect with fellow travelers is exactly what we hope to offer. Thank you again for your recommendation, and we hope to welcome you both back for another Chinese cooking adventure whenever you're in Shanghai! 😊

Very recommendable authentic cooking experience

Very nice chinese cooking experience in an authentic private space. Yin is an open and eloquent person who likes to tell all about cooking yet also everything about Shanghai and China. The dishes that we made under Yin's supervision were very tasty. Not too complicated for a beginner chef, yet done the 'Chinese way' made them very enjoyable. Yin is a patientvteacher and helps out wherever needed. We will cherish the memory of this afternoon in our hearts.

Great course, great food, amazing instructor!

Yin was extremely helpful and kind. Even though the location is out-of-the-way the instructions on how to get there were very easy to follow as she both sent us a video and met us along the way (with fans for us to use because it was so hot🤭). Even though we were not the best chefs and made mistakes she very clearly explained how to do it properly and remained very patient. She chatted with us when we cooked about random things like school in China and cars. We felt very welcomed. She also brewed tea for us and told us about different kinds of tea while we waited for the dough to rise. We also made ”dumpling pizzas” with leftover pieces of dough. After the course was done she even helped us buy medicine we needed😆. Yin really went above and beyond and i would definitely recommend this course to anyone visiting Shanghai!

Discover the Flavors of China in an Interactive Cooking Workshop: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Shanghai.

How much does Discover the Flavors of China in an Interactive Cooking Workshop cost?

+

Prices start at $89 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Shanghai usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Discover the Flavors of China in an Interactive Cooking Workshop take?

+

Plan for about 3.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Shanghai is not rushed.

Is Discover the Flavors of China in an Interactive Cooking Workshop worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 59 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 4 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Shanghai, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Discover the Flavors of China in an Interactive Cooking Workshop?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Discover the Flavors of China in an Interactive Cooking Workshop suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 5. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 3.5-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book Discover the Flavors of China in an Interactive Cooking Workshop?

+

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Shanghai can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Shanghai and add a light layer if any part of the 3.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Discover the Flavors of China in an Interactive Cooking Workshop start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Shanghai within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Shanghai?

+

On Outty we rank every Shanghai experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Private Shanghai Full Day City Tour with Old and New Highlights, Suzhou Private Day Trip from Shanghai with Bullet Train Option, 4-Hour Flexible Private Shanghai City Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Shanghai?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Shanghai?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
