1. Niagara Falls State Park

3. Cross to Goat Island, the landmass that divides American Falls from Horseshoe Falls, and walk the scenic 1.9-mile loop through old-growth forest to Terrapin Point. The Three Sisters Islands extend further into the rapids, offering peaceful spots surrounded by rushing water and remarkable views upstream.

4. Niagara Gorge Trail

   The seven-mile gorge trail system offers spectacular hiking along the rim of the Niagara Gorge, passing through hardwood forest with continuous views of the turquoise river four hundred feet below. Devil’s Hole State Park features a dramatic stone staircase descending to river level where the rapids are at their most violent, and Whirlpool State Park overlooks the massive natural whirlpool where the river makes a sharp ninety-degree turn.

5. Rainbow Bridge

   The Rainbow Bridge connects the United States and Canada across the Niagara Gorge, offering pedestrian access to the Canadian side for just one dollar. The bridge provides unique eye-level views of both the American and Horseshoe Falls and is particularly spectacular during the nightly illumination when hundreds of LED lights paint the falls in shifting colours.

6. Niagara Falls was one of the most important crossing points on the Underground Railroad, where an estimated forty thousand freedom seekers made the dangerous journey to Canada and liberty. The Heritage Center tells their stories through immersive exhibits, including the role of African American waiters at the Cataract House hotel who secretly helped people escape, and Harriet Tubman’s use of the Suspension Bridge to guide freedom seekers across the border to safety.

7. Niagara Power Vista Visitors Center

   The New York Power Authority’s free interactive museum explains how Niagara Falls generates enough electricity to power millions of homes. Over fifty hands-on exhibits explore hydroelectric engineering, and the Power Player Experience takes visitors on a virtual ride through the generation process. An observation deck offers gorge views, and the story of Nikola Tesla’s pioneering 1895 power plant that launched the age of alternating current electricity is told in vivid detail.

8. Old Fort Niagara

   Ten miles north at the mouth of the Niagara River stands one of America’s most significant military fortifications, occupied continuously by the French, British, and Americans since 1726. The star-shaped fortress overlooking Lake Ontario features living history demonstrations, original eighteenth-century buildings, and panoramic views where the Niagara River meets the Great Lake. The fort’s strategic importance during the War of 1812 makes it essential for understanding the region’s military heritage.

The charming main street offers independent shops, restaurants, and a Saturday artisan farmers market running June through October.
