About this experience
You will discover two of the most mysterious and ancient villages on the island and meet a Bali priest or healer to learn about Bali Sekala and Niskala. Your first stop will be at Truyan Village. The locals in this village live a very traditional life that is vastly different from the rest of Bali. The Trunyanese do not cremate their dead. After a cleansing ritual, the dead body is placed in a bamboo cage, locally known as ancak saji, which is placed under the Taru Menyan tree. Taru Menyan means nice smelling tree and it emanates a scent that neutralizes the smell of rotting bodies. It is from this tree that the name Trunyan is derived. It is only the bodies of married people that are placed in bamboo cages. Continue your tour and visit another ancient village called Bayung Gede, which is believed to be the parent of all of the ancient villages in Bali. Many people come here to see the hanging newborn placentas that are unique to Bayung Gede.

It’s about a 3 hour car...
It’s about a 3 hour car ride (from Lovina) up a very windy, narrow and slow mountain road only to arrive a the lake (not yet the destination) and then a 30 minute trip by boat… one way! It was not a good experience because of the travel involved and we were not told about the time to travel or the road ahead of time. We didn’t even get to go because we got physically ill on the LONG car ride there.
Response from the operator: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re truly sorry to hear that the journey caused discomfort and that you were unable to continue with the activity. You are absolutely right that the drive from Lovina involves a long mountain route with winding and narrow roads, followed by a boat crossing to reach the lake area. We sincerely apologize that this travel time and road condition were not clearly communicated in advance. This is important information, especially for guests who may be sensitive to long or winding journeys, and we understand how this led to an unpleasant experience for you. Your feedback is taken very seriously. We will use this to improve our tour descriptions and pre-trip communication so future guests are better informed and can decide comfortably whether the tour suits them. Once again, we’re very sorry for the inconvenience and discomfort you experienced, and we appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

Great tour
We are very pleased with this trip! The driver picked us up at our hotel and drove us around while answering any questions we might have about Bali and the culture of Bali. He was incredibly nice, patient and good at teaching and explaining in English. We got to see the culture outside the typical tourist attractions and he was open to showing us places other than what was on the program if that was desired. Also we want to mention that he was an excellent photographer and took nice pictures of us along the way.
Response from the operator: Thank you very much for your kind and detailed review! 🌟 We’re truly happy to hear that you were very pleased with your trip and that your driver made the experience so enjoyable. It’s wonderful to know that his friendliness, patience, and clear English explanations helped you better understand Bali and its culture. We’re especially glad you appreciated seeing places beyond the typical tourist attractions and the flexibility to adjust the itinerary to suit your interests. And of course, we’re delighted that his photography skills helped you capture some beautiful memories along the way! Thank you for choosing us, and we hope to welcome you back to Bali again in the future. Warm regards, **Yogi**

something different and interesting but very unusual
This tour is very interesting. It does not look like any other tours we did. Definitely, before the tour, I would recommend reading and researching the topic. If you are interested in local traditions and culture, If you are not scared about the topic of death, and if you like to see something that 99% of tourists would never see- then this tour is for you. I am sure that in 10-20 years these places will be prohibited for tourists to visit. So hurry up. Thanks to our tour guide Kadek, we understood much better many local traditions and beliefs. He told us very interesting stories. He is an excellent source of information not just a driver. In addition, at the end of the tour, we left our bag in the car and Kadek organized for us a taxi from Denpasar to bring the bag to Ubud. Thank you very much Kadek.

Why this scores 62
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Discover Balinese Mystic & Death Ritual in Bali: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Ubud.
How much does Discover Balinese Mystic & Death Ritual in Bali cost?
+
Prices start at $82 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Ubud usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Discover Balinese Mystic & Death Ritual in Bali take?
+
Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Ubud is not rushed.
Is Discover Balinese Mystic & Death Ritual in Bali worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 62 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.6/5 across 8 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Ubud, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Discover Balinese Mystic & Death Ritual in Bali?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Discover Balinese Mystic & Death Ritual in Bali suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Discover Balinese Mystic & Death Ritual in Bali?
+
Around 3 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Ubud can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Ubud and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Discover Balinese Mystic & Death Ritual in Bali start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Ubud within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Ubud?
+
On Outty we rank every Ubud experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Mount Batur Jeep Adventure, Best of Ubud Full-Day Tour with Jungle Swing, Full-Day Tour to Water Temples and UNESCO Rice Terraces in Bali. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Ubud?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Ubud?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
