What you'll see and do
Take a day trip to the northern Crater Lake Wenchi. Here, we have a 5-6 hour hike (or riding tour) through the beautiful countryside. You'll walk down to the crater lake before crossing the lake by boat. On a small island, we'll visit a monastery and church. From the opposite side of the lake, we start our way back through a lovely green valley with numerous clear water springs and small streams. The route takes us past corn mills powered by water and are still being used today for processing teff, a local type of grain. In the late afternoon, we return to Addis Ababa.

And it is the capital city of West Shewa zone.[1] This town has a latitude and longitude of 8°59′N 37°51′E and an elevation of 2,101 meters. Ambo is known for its mineral water, which is bottled outside of town; it is reportedly the most popular brand in Ethiopia.[2] Nearby attractions include Mount Wenchi to the south with its crater lake, and the Guder and Huluka Falls. Ambo is also the location of a research station of the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research; initiated in 1977, this station hosts research in protecting major crops in Ethiopia.[3] The town's market day is Saturday.[4]

A beautiful day at Wenchi Crater Lake
We had a wonderful day visiting Wenchi Crater Lake, and it turned out to be one of our favorite experiences in Ethiopia. The scenery on the way there was already beautiful, with green countryside, small villages and mountain views, but arriving at the crater was something completely different. The landscape around the lake is incredible. From the higher viewpoints, you get amazing views of the volcanic crater, the deep green hills and the lake sitting below. It feels peaceful and far away from the busy streets of Addis Ababa. We decided to hike down toward the lake, which was definitely worth doing. The trail was beautiful, although some sections were quite steep, so comfortable walking shoes are a must. Along the way we passed local people, horses and beautiful countryside. The fresh mountain air and quiet surroundings made the walk very enjoyable. One of our favorite moments was reaching the lake itself. The scenery was so peaceful, and we had plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings and take photos. The combination of the mountains, forest, farmland and crater lake makes Wenchi feel very different from other places we visited in Ethiopia. We also appreciated meeting local people along the way and getting a glimpse of everyday life in the area. It made the visit feel more authentic rather than simply being a sightseeing stop. The day was tiring, especially because of the hike back up, but we all agreed that it was completely worth it. By the end of the day we were tired but very happy. Wenchi Crater Lake is definitely worth adding to an Ethiopia itinerary if you enjoy nature, hiking and beautiful landscapes. For us, it was one of those places where the photos really don't capture how beautiful it feels to be there in person.

Amazing Trip to Wenchi Crater Lake
Traveling alone can sometimes feel intimidating, but this tour made me feel comfortable from the moment it started. The entire trip was well organized, and everything ran on time. Wenchi Crater Lake is one of the most beautiful places I've visited in Ethiopia. The scenery is breathtaking, with lush green hills, peaceful lake views, and fresh mountain air. Our guide was outstanding. He was knowledgeable about the history, culture, and natural beauty of the area, and he explained everything with enthusiasm. He was also very patient, making sure everyone was comfortable and never felt rushed. As a solo traveler, I appreciated how welcoming and friendly he was. He made the experience enjoyable and ensured I always felt included. The transportation was comfortable, and the itinerary gave us enough time to enjoy the lake, take photos, and appreciate the peaceful surroundings. The hike and optional boat ride made the experience even more memorable. A Day of Fresh Air, Incredible Views, and Great Memories with Friends
A few of my friends and I booked the Day Trip from Addis Ababa to Wenchi Crater Lake with Danakil Depression Tours, and it was the perfect break from the city.
