    An unforgettable and...

An unforgettable and deeply moving experience. The hosts were welcoming and knowledgeable, sharing the traditions and meaning behind Día de los Muertos with such heart. Creating our own altar and learning about the symbolism made it feel personal and special. The atmosphere was beautiful—full of color, culture, and connection. Truly a must-do if you want to experience the real spirit of Oaxaca!

    Emotional Experience

The experience of building an offrenda was very moving and emotional. I appreciated being able to bring photos of my loved ones to honor. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to experience taking part in assembling an elaborate offrenda and to learn more about the symbolism. The marigold cutting experience felt a bit rushed. We spent a good bit of time preparing through ritual, but had little time to take photos in a very scenic place. Additoinally the meal at the venue was rather lackluster.

    An amazing experience

The experience started off with a mezcal tasting. The mezcal was smooth and good. We then got to pick out day of the dead flowers and take pictures in the fields. After we build an altar for our loved ones which was a serene experience. We got to eat a buffet style hacienda. The whole time a guide explained the traditions and guided us through the experience. It was very traditional and worth every penny.

    Meaningful experience

This was a truly special experience. I will probably never forget today. I learned and felt so much. I would definitely recommend this excursion! As a side note, we did encounter an unavoidable snag in the day and the tour operators were swift and thorough in fixing the problem. In a world where anything can happen, working with people who will take care of you is very important!!

    10/10 Spiritual Immersive Experience

Hallowen in Oaxaca we booked this tour as a group of 3 to go out to the Cempasúchil (marigold) fields and to have a small group alter building experience. Our shaman, Sergio, did a cleansing ceremony after he greeted us. We sat out in the campo, had fresh jicama straight from the ground, and had a mezcal that we tosted to the earth with for its abundance and gifts. Next we headed to the fields. We cut our flowers, Cemasuchil and Borrla, to present for the alter and then with Sergio’s guidance, we all went to put it together. He explained what each step represented and why all the symbolism. We ate a Oaxacan buffet and after got a chance to visit Sergio’s tonas shop.

Day of the Dead Experience + alebrijes painting: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Oaxaca City.

How much does Day of the Dead Experience + alebrijes painting cost?

    +

Prices start at $156 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Oaxaca City usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Day of the Dead Experience + alebrijes painting take?

    +

Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Oaxaca City is not rushed.

Is Day of the Dead Experience + alebrijes painting worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 57 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 6 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Oaxaca City, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Day of the Dead Experience + alebrijes painting?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Day of the Dead Experience + alebrijes painting suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Day of the Dead Experience + alebrijes painting?

    +

Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Oaxaca City can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Oaxaca City and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Day of the Dead Experience + alebrijes painting start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Oaxaca City within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Oaxaca City?

    +

On Outty we rank every Oaxaca City experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Hierve el Agua 2.5 hours, Mitla, Tule, Rugs and Mezcal for a Day, OAXACA CULTURAL FOOD TOUR, eat like a local., Monte Alban for 3hrs, Black Pottery and Alebrijes with Admissions. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Oaxaca City?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Oaxaca City?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
