Wrong Kinda Spooky
I have never experienced anything quite like this tour. By that, I mean I have never been on a tour I so thoroughly did not enjoy, yet somehow had so much fun making fun of with my friends afterward. Our tour guide made sure to tell us that it was his first tour, that he would be reading from handwritten notes, that he didn’t know the area well, and that he had found the job on Indeed. And, well… he lived up to every one of those self-deprecating circumstantial impediments to success. INDEED. His stories were rambling at best. We don’t need a tour guide with a PhD; we just need someone capable of constructing a story with a beginning, middle, and end. At one point, we visited a hospital that was constructed in 1985 and were told to think about a hospital in Pittsburgh. We were then informed that there were, in fact, no ghosts in this particular hospital—but that there were ghosts in a hospital about 40 minutes away. There were no specific stories about that hospital, either. We were simply told that tours were available there and that, if we happened to be in the area, we could probably find them by Googling. Throughout the tour, I had the distinct impression that our guide was unfamiliar with both the area and the subject matter. It honestly seemed as though he had never walked the tour route before and had never been accompanied by a trainer. I’m curious whether he has ever spoken to or even met another person who works for this company. Certainly, if anyone who actually values this company had witnessed this man conducting a tour, I cannot imagine they would have allowed us to have this experience. To be fair, we did have a great time laughing about how ridiculous and uncomfortable the whole thing was. It felt like watching a stand-up comedy show where every single comic bombs—but somehow keeps getting handed the microphone. And to be clear, I don’t think the blame lies with the guide. It lies squarely with whoever runs this company. How you could possibly throw this guy to the wolves—completely unprepared and without adequate training—is mind-boggling. Honestly, it’s a little cruel. He did his best, and we got a chuckle out of it. But if you’re going to charge people to follow a guide around while he reads what amounts to a high-school-level book report about the history of the city, please train and vet your guides first. This guy deserved better training, and your customers deserved a better tour.

We had Ben as our tour guide, and he was absolutely fantastic! He was friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. At one point, I desperately needed to use the restroom, and he even took us off the tour route so I could make a quick stop, which I really appreciated. His stories were captivating, and it was clear he was genuinely passionate about his job and sharing his knowledge. He made the entire experience enjoyable and memorable.
