What you get
About this experience
Downtown Athens is a place where life is lived bite by bite, from old-school dairy bars and bustling souvlaki counters to historic markets and hidden arcades. On this tour, we’ll explore the culinary backstreets of central Athens, tasting thick Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts, loukoumades, northern-style souvlaki and kebab based on a recipe brought by refugees from Constantinople. We’ll also discover the seafood eateries tucked inside the city’s traditional stoas and sample artisanal cheeses, honey and homemade spirits. At Varvakeios, Athens’ central market, we’ll explore the meat and seafood stalls before stopping for classic booze and bites at a tiny 1970s institution. We’ll then cross over to the fruit, vegetable and pickle market to taste different varieties of Greek olives. Rough, beautiful, ancient and modern, downtown Athens tells the story of the city through its food.

Understanding Greek culture though food.
Our Culinary tour with Natali Chavez was terrific! Her knowledge and insight was impressive and she was delightful to spend the day with. It felt like walking around Athens with a friend. I would recommend this tour to anyone interested in understanding a culture through its food...and enjoying a lot of amazing food along the way. We will definitely book another Culinary Backstreets tour.

Truly a tour of local cuisine
This was one of the best tours I’ve ever been on. The pace was about right, we hit many places that only had signs in Greek (not the touristy places with everything in English). The honey tasting at the old, family run store was very informative. The fish and meat market was unique and the olive tasting was fun. Katia was a great host, unhurried yet no wasted time. She was engaging and very knowledgeable and proud of her Greek and Athens heritage. Some might ask if 5 1/2 hours is too long, especially in the middle of warm day. It is definitely a commitment to spend the better part of a day walking around Athens but it never seemed like we weren’t heading somewhere interesting or trying something new. We ending up walking close to 10km (6 miles) so we saw a lot of the city. One of the highlights was the book that each couple received at the end of the tour. It had most, if not all of the places we visited as well as other useful info about Athens (much better than any of the travel books we read before visiting). We’ll definitely lend it to any friend that is heading for Athens (as long as they promise to return it!). Overall an enjoyable, informative and filling day.
Response from the operator: Thank you for the review! We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed exploring the daily life and complexity of Athens alongside our team. Thank you for supporting the unsung heroes of the kitchen and helping us preserve these beautiful, family-run culinary traditions.

Why this scores 86
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Culinary Secrets of Downtown Athens: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Athens.
How much does Culinary Secrets of Downtown Athens cost?
+
Prices start at $25 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Athens usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Culinary Secrets of Downtown Athens take?
+
Plan for about 5.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Athens is not rushed.
Is Culinary Secrets of Downtown Athens worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 86 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 122 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Athens, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Culinary Secrets of Downtown Athens?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Culinary Secrets of Downtown Athens suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Culinary Secrets of Downtown Athens?
+
Around 43 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Athens can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Athens and add a light layer if any part of the 5.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Culinary Secrets of Downtown Athens start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Athens within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Athens?
+
On Outty we rank every Athens experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Athens Small Group E-Bike Tour, Small Group Greek Traditional Food Tour in Athens 20+ Tastings, Athens Scenic Bike Tour with Regular or Electric Bike + Acropolis. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Athens?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Athens?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
