So Much More Than a Cooking Class!

Cooking with Chela was easily one of the highlights of our entire trip to Costa Rica. I honestly cannot recommend this experience enough! From the moment we arrived, Chela made us feel completely welcome. This was so much more than a cooking class. It felt like being welcomed into someone’s home and spending the evening cooking, laughing, learning, and sharing a meal together. We made several traditional dishes, including gallo pinto, empanadas, vegetable ceviche, chicken, and arroz con leche. Everything was absolutely delicious. In fact, the meal we cooked with Chela was the best meal we ate during our entire trip! Chela taught us about the ingredients and Costa Rican cooking, and we also got to explore her beautiful property. She showed us the plants and foods she grows, introduced us to the animals, and even took us on a little nighttime walk with flashlights where we spotted several beautiful Costa Rican frogs. It truly felt like a farm-to-table experience. Our entire group loved it, including someone who normally doesn’t even enjoy cooking! Chela has such a warm, fun personality and a heart of gold. She gets everyone involved, makes you feel completely at home, and somehow has you laughing while creating an amazing meal together. I bought her cookbook and can’t wait to recreate some of what we learned at home. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with friends, or with family, put Cooking with Chela on your Costa Rica itinerary. I would do this again every time I came back. Truly a 100/10 experience!

    Just book it now!

We're only on our first day of vacation in Costa Rica, and I guarantee this will be the best experience we'll have in the entire country. I would recommend it to anyone who is going to Costa Rica, even if they weren't planning to go to La Fortuna. Make the trip just for this!! We booked this experience over others because we wanted to try authentic food, and have a relaxing experience during a typical afternoon rain storm, and we hit the jackpot! Cooking with Isela was so fun. Not only did we get to choose which meal to cook, and then cook our meals (with PLENTY of leftovers by the way- saves money for another meal later!), but we had spare time to see her gardens and animals. We were the only people who booked during our time, so we got a very personalized experience, and the whole team made us feel so welcomed. I'm a girl who loves pictures and videos, and they made sure to get tons of us cooking, so I didn't have to worry about doing so! Isela even helped me practice some Spanish vocabulary throughout the class! Once you cook your meals, you get to share it with Isela and the team. We could've sat there for another 4 hours talking, if they didn't have a class coming in shortly after! I could go on and on and on. I wish I could give 10 stars. Just book it now!

    Wonderful Family Adventure!

Chela was absolutely amazing with our younger kids. We had such a fabulous time learning from her, and really appreciated her extra gentle touch with teaching our kiddos knife skills!

More Than a Cooking Class — An Unforgettable Experience

We had such an incredible experience at El Fogón de Chela! My husband and I went with another family, and it ended up being one of the most special experiences of our trip. Chela welcomed us into her world, explained that we would all be cooking together, and shared her story with us. Hearing how she started with very little and managed to build this beautiful place and her cooking classes was truly inspiring. The place itself is so unique and full of character. She also has animals, including goats and a cow, who absolutely love attention and cuddles, which made the experience even more fun and memorable. We learned simple, delicious Costa Rican recipes that we can actually recreate at home, which we loved. It wasn't just about cooking — it was about sharing, learning, laughing and discovering Chila's story and culture. I would recommend this experience to absolutely anyone visiting La Fortuna. Thank you, Chila, for such a special and unforgettable time! ❤️

Costa Rica The Chela Cooking Experience: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for La Fortuna.

How much does Costa Rica The Chela Cooking Experience cost?

    +

Prices start at $60 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in La Fortuna usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Costa Rica The Chela Cooking Experience take?

    +

Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in La Fortuna is not rushed.

Is Costa Rica The Chela Cooking Experience worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 78 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 154 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in La Fortuna, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Costa Rica The Chela Cooking Experience?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Costa Rica The Chela Cooking Experience suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Costa Rica The Chela Cooking Experience?

    +

Around 54 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in La Fortuna can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in La Fortuna and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Costa Rica The Chela Cooking Experience start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central La Fortuna within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in La Fortuna?

    +

On Outty we rank every La Fortuna experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Upper Balsa River White Water Rafting Class 3/4 in Costa Rica, White Water Rafting Class II and III, Authentic Coffee and Chocolate Tour at North Fields. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit La Fortuna?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in La Fortuna?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
