All three of the essential aspects of the dance are expertly demonstrated during the show: cante, baile and guitarra (songs, dancing and guitar music). Stunning!
Our first ever flamenco show so we have no immediate reference point for this. We booked our tickets direct with El Cardenal in Cordoba several weeks ahead of a four night stay in the city. We booked a 20:30 show with a drink included for 30 euros per ticket. We arrived amidst darkening clouds. The venue is relatively small and accommodates maybe 60 or so, with tables for drinks. We had a fairly generously poured glass of wine, not the finest you’ll ever have but perfectly pleasant. Around 15 minutes before the start the thunderstorm and torrential rain rolled in. We were in the front row, but a few at the sides had to be moved as water dripped through the edges of the awning. Slight delay to the show. It is hard to accurately describe the next 75 minutes. An assault (positive) on the senses, mesmerising, hard to know where to look, the exceptional guitar player, the female singer, the mainly solo dancers, their feet or their shaping. It seemed, at least based on our earlier visit to the flamenco museum in Cordoba, that it is the dancer or dancers who lead the singer and guitarist, and it did seem throughout that both were watching the dancer(s) intently and adjusting their playing or vocals accordingly. It was a great experience but one that required a full debrief over a glass of high quality red wine and a top notch Iberico ham and sheep cheese platter at Bodegas Campus, to try to compute the experience. Since seeing this we have experienced a show in Triana, and are due one in Jerez. Triana was a quite different delivery, but in no way undermines a wonderful experience at El Cardenal. Just to add this is very much a professional show and audience participation - beyond applause at appropriate times - is not encouraged, and certainly there is no dragging audience members up on stage to take part. It is the art of flamenco in its purest form and a privilege to watch. An experience therefore not to be missed.
