What you get

    About this experience

This unique gastronomic day trip takes us southeast to the forgotten "city" of Librazhd. Here we'll visit an extraordinary local winery, which only started offering visits and wine-tastings in 2019. Don't expect a stylish tasting room, or video presentations. Most of the equipment dates from before the Russian-Albanian split of the early 1960s, when the winery was shipped over from Georgia in the then Soviet Union. We'll spend an hour or so looking around the winery, and of course tasting the produce. Afterwards we'll sit down to lunch at the winery's new restaurant for a meal of Tava Elbasani - the regional speciality of lamb slow-cooked in yoghurt sauce. Please note, for groups of up to six we will use our classic Russian UAZ Buhanka minivan - a 1950s Soviet design. This does not have AC! On the open road the air circulates, but if there is traffic coming back to Tirana it can get warm inside! Please do not book if you feel this will be an issue for you.

Fascinating, fun and a great day out from Tirana

We had so much fun touring the 1960s winery. It felt totally different from every other wine tour I've been on. The rooms are like a time machine back to the USSR. Lunch and wine in the cantina was lovely too.

Response from the operator: We're so glad you enjoyed the day and the winery! It is a total time-warp with all that old Soviet equipment - we hope they never renovate it!

    Lovely wine trip and tasting

This was a great trip. Lovely drive over the mountains to get to the winery (about 2 hours). Then a wonderful welcome at the winery - process explained and saw the equipment old and new. Tasting of red and white wine plus two Raki and a cognac. Lunch was delicious too. But the best bit was the great guide Mick who told us so much and made the whole experience great.

Response from the operator: Thanks so much for the review! We're glad you enjoyed the winery - it is a unique place! We should point out for anyone reading this, the return journey is faster than 2h as we take the highway back, not the scenic route!

From Tirana to Timeless Tastes: A Journey into Albania’s Hidden Heart

This fantastic tour takes you about 70 km from Tirana to the small town of Librazhd. Kreshnik, our guide, is from Librazhd and grew up there. In a small jeep, he drove us through his homeland, stopping along the way for coffee and giving us plenty of time to take everything in. Thanks to Kreshnik, we gained deep insight into Albania’s turbulent history. By the time we arrived at the communist-era winery, we were well prepared. The owner personally guided us through its historic halls. It’s a wonderful wine region, and we enjoyed an extensive wine and raki tasting. Afterwards, in a idyllic setting, we were served a fabulous meal: lamb in yogurt sauce with typical Albanian side dishes. The atmosphere was warm and sociable, and we spent the whole afternoon chatting. It was a truly exceptional tour. If you’re interested in culture and people in Albania and also enjoy good food and drink, this is the perfect experience for you. Kreshnik is an experienced guide who does everything he can to make you fall in love with his homeland. Curious to meet him, discover Albania’s communist past, and try lamb in yogurt sauce?

Response from the operator: Thanks so much for the great review, Kathrin! We're glad you enjoyed the day - Kreshnik had a great time showing you his hometown. We're glad too you appreciated the winery, it's a real time-warp. A big surprise for us was the tav kosi - we were worried as the chef was new, but it was a real highlight! We hope you make it back to Albania one day to discover more of its Communist heritage.

    Can't miss cultural experience

Outstanding, informative, fun experience! The drive to the location alone is worth it, but once at the winery, you will be treated to the best meal ever and terrific wines and rakis. If I could give this trip more than five stars, I would! Highly recommend!

Response from the operator: So glad you enjoyed the trip! The winery really is unique so we're glad you appreciated it!

Communist Winery: Tour, Tasting and Lunch: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Tirana.

How much does Communist Winery: Tour, Tasting and Lunch cost?

    +

Prices start at $105 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Tirana usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Communist Winery: Tour, Tasting and Lunch take?

    +

Plan for about 5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Tirana is not rushed.

Is Communist Winery: Tour, Tasting and Lunch worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 59 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 4 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Tirana, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Communist Winery: Tour, Tasting and Lunch?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Communist Winery: Tour, Tasting and Lunch suitable for kids and families?

    +

How far in advance should I book Communist Winery: Tour, Tasting and Lunch?

    +

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Tirana can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Tirana and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Communist Winery: Tour, Tasting and Lunch start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Tirana within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Tirana?

    +

On Outty we rank every Tirana experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include From Tirana- Hiking Tour to Bovilla Lake & Gamti Mountain, From Tirana / Durres: Gamti Mountain and Bovilla lake Day Trip, Kruja castle, the old Bazaar & Sarisalltik- Departure from Tirana. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Tirana?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Tirana?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
