Chilkoot Lake Kayaking-Tranquility with bear/whales and seals as additional side attractions
We did this kayak trip as an independent excursion while cruising on the Royal Princess and I would recommend this to anyone who likes to be outside and away from the crowds and be on the water. Getting onto the ferry to Haines from the cruise dock was easy and the ferry ride to and from Haines to Skagway was gorgeous. The fast ferry felt like its own excursion. The naturalist on the ferry was educational and helped us spot wildlife and water falls. It was a short van ride to Chilkoot Lake from the ferry dock in Haines and then we were quickly on the water. Our group was just our family and Joe and although there were two other groups on the lake it felt like we had the lake entirely to ourselves. Joe coached my teenage son on using more advanced kayak strokes and this was his favorite excursion of the entire trip. The lake is surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, bird song--it was very peaceful and tranquil. On the way back to the ferry dock in we spotted an Alaskan Brown Bear and were able to watch the salmon count on the fishing weir. Thanks Joe for a great morning!

A wonderful experience with guide, Joe
We had a private kayaking experience with our guide, Joe. He was friendly and professional and knowledgeable about the wildlife and plants in the area. He reviewed some safety issues with kayaking and we set off in a tandem kayak. My daughter and I had kayaked before which was helpful. At the end of our kayaking experience Joe provided a snack in the picnic area at the lake. He also gave us a tour of the town of Haines before taking us to the fast ferry. I highly recommend this excursion!

A Day We’ll Never Forget on Chilkoot Lake
My wife and I had an unforgettable kayaking experience on Chilkoot Lake. The weather was perfect—clear skies and calm waters—and we had the entire lake to ourselves, which made it feel truly magical. Our guide, Joe, was fantastic: friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about the area. His insights added so much depth to the adventure. If you're looking for outdoor activities in Alaska, we highly recommend booking with SEAK Expeditions.

Beautiful morning on the lake
We had a FANTASTIC morning with Joe. We got lucky, and it was a sunny day with just my wife and I attending, so Joe was able to give us all of his attention. Answered all our questions, gave us info we didn’t even know we needed, and had everything perfectly prepared for us. He let us set the pace as we paddled around the lake, got to know us a bit, and set a perfect tone the whole time. When we finished, he had a great snack spread for us, and gave us a little bit of a tour on the way back to the ferry. Couldn’t have asked for more.

Absolutely Gorgeous
This was one of the highlights of our entire trip to Alaska. The views were gorgeous and our guides, Sophie and Annie were super friendly and knowledgeable. There are bathrooms on site and we were picked up right at the ferry port. We saw tons of bald eagles and we were the only ones on the lake so it was quiet and serene. Could not recommend this tour enough.

Chilkoot Lake Kayaking - Departing From Skagway: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Haines.
How much does Chilkoot Lake Kayaking - Departing From Skagway cost?
+
Prices start at $294 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Haines usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Chilkoot Lake Kayaking - Departing From Skagway take?
+
Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Haines is not rushed.
Is Chilkoot Lake Kayaking - Departing From Skagway worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 61 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.7/5 across 11 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Haines, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Chilkoot Lake Kayaking - Departing From Skagway?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Chilkoot Lake Kayaking - Departing From Skagway suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Chilkoot Lake Kayaking - Departing From Skagway?
+
Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Haines can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Haines and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Chilkoot Lake Kayaking - Departing From Skagway start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Haines within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Haines?
+
Haines, AK packs its best experiences into walkable neighborhoods, local food, and day trips nearby. Outty ranks every bookable tour and activity in Haines by rating quality, review depth, booking demand and value, so you can see the standouts before you book. On Outty we rank every Haines experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Chilkoot Lake Kayaing - Departing from Haines., Chilkoot Lake Nature and Wildlife Viewing (2.5 hrs in Haines), Private Group Eagle Preserve Float Trip in Haines. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Haines?
+
Spring and fall bring the best weather and lighter crowds in Haines, while summer has the widest choice of tours and evening activities. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Haines?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
