Great Tour, Perfect Day
On a cruise and had not scheduled anything for Haines. thought we should take a day off. Well, my wife wasn't feeling well and I decided at the last minute to book a tour with Tom. It was terrific. Tom mixes just the right blend of history/culture, nature, and photography. Although there's never any guarantees with wild animals, we saw black bear and brown bear (i.e. Grizzly with cubs), eagles, etc. Tom knows the area like the back of his hand and seems to know everyone in the community. Great eye for spotting birds, bears, etc. Also, I went to book the afternoon before - he fortunately had an opening and the communication through Viator was really great. Finally, check out his website and there's a link to "Smugmug" which is his photography site. His images are really beautiful. I would book him again if/when I return to Haines. (PS: if you're there on a cruise, the early evening sail out of Haines when the sun is setting is one of the most magical experiences you will ever experience - weather permitting)!!! (Note that all of the attached pictures except the Eagle were during the tour with Tom).

Great Guy
Tom is an amazing guide and so generous with his time and knowledge. Despite the fact we are not 'big' photographers and we only used our iPhones Tom helped us consider the composition of our images (which has since improved). Don't miss this trip. It was one of the two highlights of our holiday.

Great Local Tour
Tom was fantastic! Fun, informative, and enjoyable day of nature and photography. He knew the spots, timed the visits well to avoid crowded ship tours, and gave great insights into the area (and iPhone photography!)

A wonderful day in Haines with Tom G
After not getting to see anything in Haines on a trip over 25 years ago, we finally got the chance to come back and wanted to do things right. Tom seemed like the perfect guide to help us and he was. Very knowledgeable and loved his photography setup tips. It was our most favorite stop on a 12-day Alaska/Canada cruise.

Fantastic tour! Tom was an excellent local guide for our small group of 4. Very accomodating, passionate about photography and this area. Wish we had more time
Response from the operator: It was my pleasure to enjoy your company. That's the great advantage of doing private tours. I can accommodate your expectations and preferences. Makes a great day for all of us. You all were fine company and I look forward to your return visit.

Why this scores 65
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Focus on Haines Private Nature / Photography tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Haines.
How much does Focus on Haines Private Nature / Photography tour cost?
+
Prices start at $600 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Haines usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Focus on Haines Private Nature / Photography tour take?
+
Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Haines is not rushed.
Is Focus on Haines Private Nature / Photography tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 65 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 45 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable culture & history in Haines, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Focus on Haines Private Nature / Photography tour?
+
No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.
Is Focus on Haines Private Nature / Photography tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Focus on Haines Private Nature / Photography tour?
+
Around 16 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Haines can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Haines and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Focus on Haines Private Nature / Photography tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Haines within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Haines?
+
Haines, AK packs its best experiences into walkable neighborhoods, local food, and day trips nearby. Outty ranks every bookable tour and activity in Haines by rating quality, review depth, booking demand and value, so you can see the standouts before you book. On Outty we rank every Haines experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Chilkoot Lake Kayaing - Departing from Haines., Chilkoot Lake Nature and Wildlife Viewing (2.5 hrs in Haines), Private Group Eagle Preserve Float Trip in Haines. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Haines?
+
Spring and fall bring the best weather and lighter crowds in Haines, while summer has the widest choice of tours and evening activities. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Haines?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
