What you get

    About this experience

At 9:30 AM, our adventure begins with a hotel pick-up to the base camp. After a safety briefing, we gear up and fit our bikes before shuttling to Monthatan Waterfall. Here, we start our 11 km hike through stunning highland jungle, home to towering indigenous Mai Yai trees, towards the Hmong Hill Tribe Village at the summit of Doi Pui National Park. After about 3 hours of steady walking, we reach the summit village at 1400m, where our bikes and gear will be ready. After a well-earned lunch break, we descend through the National Park on mountain bikes. The 2-hour (14 km) ride down to Lake Huay Tung Tao is thrilling, with gravity rewarding us with a cool downhill ride and breathtaking views of the Mae Ping Valley. Once lakeside, we enjoy a delicious meal with cool drinks and can take a refreshing dip in the lake before heading back to our Chiang Mai hotel, returning around 4:30 PM. This tour, combining hiking and biking, offers an unforgettable adventure through Northern Thailand.

    Must-do when in Chiang Mai

My guides A and Jon were great. The lead guide (A or Ay) spoke excellent English but both were cheerful, helpful, and allowed us to have a a lot of fun, but simultaneously managed to keep us safe. I’d highly recommend anybody who has never been, an excellent beginners experience, but you have to have the courage and willingness to potentially fall. These guys are very safety minded, though, and nobody who fell got injured. The green canopy views, the feel of the windy hillside, and all the beautiful sounds of the forest like the cicada, and the birds, were really an amazing and worthwhile excursion from the town.

Great guides, great tour, questionable bike maintenance

Guide: 10/10 Bike Maintenance: 3/10 Great experience, the tour was planned well, with a nice hike, good lunch, some great views, and fun biking. We did not actually see a waterfall on our hike, and we had to stop on the bike 12+ times for bike maintenance issues. Mostly the chains would not stay on, but also my breaks started to fail part way down and we had to replace break pads. The break lines weren't bled properly so the brakes were spongy. My guides fork broke, so he had to send me solo down the more challenging parts. As with any guided tour, you experience will vary depending on the skill level of your group. We went with a small group and did the whole descent in 39 minutes, but my guide said some groups take 3-4 hours to do the same route which would be a painfully slow pace for someone who has mountain biked before.

Response from the operator: Thank you for taking the time to share detailed feedback. We’re pleased to hear you enjoyed the guide, route planning, views, and overall experience. Regarding the points raised about equipment: all bicycles are inspected and serviced regularly, and any mechanical issues encountered on the trail were addressed immediately to ensure the ride could continue safely. Brake pads are wear items and may require replacement depending on riding conditions and group pace; addressing this on the day is part of responsible bike management, not a failure of preparation. The route includes a jungle hike and scenic viewpoints; waterfalls in this area are seasonal and dependent on recent rainfall. As noted, group pace can vary significantly depending on participants’ experience levels. On this occasion, a small and capable group allowed for a faster descent than average, which we were happy to accommodate. We appreciate your feedback and will continue to maintain our equipment and operations to support a wide range of rider abilities and conditions.

    Outstanding experience!

This was utterly breathtaking! Our guide was Danay (sorry if spelt incorrectly) the weather was bad! It was raining and hot the conditions on the way up and down were horrendous but we did not stop enjoying ourselves from start to finish. I am a fit person but this was HARD! I have done this before when it was dry and it was easier but we were fighting with the elements the whole way and sadly I had to get off the bike a few times on the way down because I’m a wimp! Danay never made me feel bad in fact we had the most amazing conversation. He told us all about his life and showed great interest in ours! It was an experience we will never forget! His knowledge of the area and his constant lookout for wild boar and snakes resulted in us spotting a golden web spider! I recommend this to anyone but it’s not for you if you are not fairly fit! That said; I would recommend anyone to take this opportunity! The views, the food, the stories, the jungle the people! It was outstanding!

A wonderful was to discover the region off the beaten track

I was alone with the guide, riding through mud and the forest. It is not easy, and you must be ready to suffer a little... but it is so rewarding! We went through small mud paths, even if I feel relatively comfortable on bike, I was breaking the whole time. The company had brought full protection gears for me, and the bike was in an excellent shape. So the everything was provided to make sure the real risk would be minimised. Be ready to suffer up-hill, be very focussed and happy your breaks work well as you go downhill, and enjoy amazing views and encounters that you would probably not have done otherwise.

    Awesome trip. Amazing guides

The trip was amazing. The only reason I gave it a 4 star was due to them having to change our trip itinerary last minute to do the sticky waterfall and 22km back country biking. Still was epic, but not the original plan/trip we wanted. But our guides were fun and the views were still amazing.

Is Chiang mai Hike & Downhill Bike Adventure –Suthep National Park worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 81 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.7/5 across 205 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Chiang Mai, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Chiang Mai and add a light layer if any part of the 9-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in Chiang Mai?

    +

On Outty we rank every Chiang Mai experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Half-Day Thai Cooking Class at Organic Farm in Chiang Mai, Full Day Thai Cooking at Farm (Chiang Mai), Thai and Akha Cooking Class in Chiang Mai. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Chiang Mai?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Chiang Mai?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
