What you get

    About this experience

Carmel by the Sea is a story of unmatchable beauty and history that can be explored on this self-guided audio drive. This one of a kind village of less than 5,000 was founded by writers, poets, artists and musicians over 100 years ago. It was that artist colony vibe, along with the beauty of the ocean, that brought multi-media producer Bob Hamilton here from LA and New York over 40 years ago. Over those years, he proudly took visiting friends to all the hidden story locations that the average tourist may never see.  Now, the VoiceMap app lets him take you on your own private trip through the town with over a hundred art galleries, wine tasting rooms, high-end restaurants and shops and then to the beaches and around the point, ending at the 230-year-old Carmel Mission. From start to finish the tour takes less than an hour, but you travel at your own pace. The tour is ready whenever you are and the audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline.

    2. Carmel Beach Boardwalk

This stands out as one of the best shorelines you'll ever get to see. You can bring your dog, it's gigantic, and it's really clean. The colors are amazing from the white sands to the shifting blue shades of the ocean.

Fun to travel routes i haven’t been on before in the area. Narrow roads and in neighborhoods. You are forced to write a review with Viator. Disable the option before taking the trip in your profile.

Only worked about half the time

I guess Carmel is just too hard to keep the audio tour on track. We kept getting lost, not knowing where to turn, and got off the course. We ended up only hearing about half. We have used Audio Tours in our car in other areas, which worked great. It may be the closeness of each road in Carmel.

    We brought our viator...

We brought our viator printout to the person letting cats into 17 mile drive in Carmel by the sea. They told us it was a bus tour and we had to go to the bus tour place to ride with them. This was not true because we bought a self guided tour and we were supposed to use them app we downloaded to hear our tour. So they had us turn around and exit. So we never used the tickets we bought and didn't get to go on the 17 mile drive.

Private Tour Guide without the Expense

I've been to Carmel many times and even I learned so much. It was easy to use and the quality was excellent. It was like having my own private local tour guide without the hassle of a schedule or the high cost.

Carmel by the Sea: A Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Monterey & Carmel.

How much does Carmel by the Sea: A Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $10 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Monterey & Carmel usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Carmel by the Sea: A Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 0.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Monterey & Carmel is not rushed.

Is Carmel by the Sea: A Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 45 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3.8/5 across 9 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable food & drink in Monterey & Carmel, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Carmel by the Sea: A Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour?

    +

No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.

Is Carmel by the Sea: A Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 0.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Carmel by the Sea: A Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour?

    +

Around 3 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Monterey & Carmel can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Monterey & Carmel and add a light layer if any part of the 0.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Carmel by the Sea: A Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Monterey & Carmel within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Monterey & Carmel?

    +

Monterey Bay is one of the best whale watching stretches in the world, alongside kayak tours over the kelp forest, 17-Mile Drive and Big Sur coastal runs, and Carmel wine walks. Boat size and naturalist quality decide the whale trips, and we score them accordingly. On Outty we rank every Monterey & Carmel experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Monterey's 17 Mile Drive Guided Electric Bike Tour, 3 hr, Whale Watching Tour From Monterey, Elkhorn Slough Wildlife Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Monterey & Carmel?

    +

April to November for whales and calm seas. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Monterey & Carmel?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
