Best Day Whale Watching Ever! (Lots more here than just whales)

MLK Day 2026. The day started off slow. We found a single humpback whale and followed him for a little while. It was looking pretty dead, but then the crew found a whole group of humpback whales and we stayed with them for quite a while. There were so many it was difficult to tell exactly how many. That would've made the trip worthwhile right there. But then the crew spotted something else and took off to find acres of frenetic ocean activity. There were sea birds and thousands of dolphins, Pacific white sided dolphins and northern right whale dolphins. They were everywhere, even swimming alongside the boat, and one leapt completely out of the water several times. That was incredible and we stayed there for quite a while and by this time we were quite far out and it was getting late, but the crew stayed on that incredible spot because it was such a rare find. Finally, we had to head for home but on the way they spotted something else and made another stop. They found a pod of Rizzo's dolphins and we watched that for a little while before returning to the dock a little late, but very happy. This was our best ever whale watching excursion. Also, the operation is run very well and the crew was great.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much! We’re glad that day turned into such an incredible trip and that you got to experience all that wildlife out there. Sounds like one of those special Monterey Bay days. We really appreciate you coming out with us and hope to see you back again for another one!

    Great family experience

Great whale watching company. Loved the group size. We saw whales! Narration was clear, friendly and informative. I liked that multiple boats help each other find whales and be successful for their customers. Would recommend them.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much! We’re glad you had a great family trip and enjoyed the smaller group size. Happy to hear you got whale sightings and enjoyed the narration. We really appreciate the recommendation and hope to see you again!

    Brilliant whale watching tour

We did the 9am tour and had a fantastic trip. We were lucky enough to see Pacific white-sided dolphins and northern right whale dolphins swimming together around the boat plus two humpback whales lunge feeding and a blue shark. The crew (Isaiah, Cory and Captain Rod) were brilliant, very knowledgeable about the marine life and made it a really enjoyable trip. Highly recommend this company.

3-Hour Whale Watching Tour from Monterey: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Monterey & Carmel.

How much does 3-Hour Whale Watching Tour from Monterey cost?

    +

Prices start at $75 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Monterey & Carmel usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does 3-Hour Whale Watching Tour from Monterey take?

    +

Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Monterey & Carmel is not rushed.

Is 3-Hour Whale Watching Tour from Monterey worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 80 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 242 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Monterey & Carmel, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule 3-Hour Whale Watching Tour from Monterey?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is 3-Hour Whale Watching Tour from Monterey suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book 3-Hour Whale Watching Tour from Monterey?

    +

Around 85 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Monterey & Carmel can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Monterey & Carmel and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does 3-Hour Whale Watching Tour from Monterey start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Monterey & Carmel within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Monterey & Carmel?

    +

Monterey Bay is one of the best whale watching stretches in the world, alongside kayak tours over the kelp forest, 17-Mile Drive and Big Sur coastal runs, and Carmel wine walks. Boat size and naturalist quality decide the whale trips, and we score them accordingly. On Outty we rank every Monterey & Carmel experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Monterey's 17 Mile Drive Guided Electric Bike Tour, 3 hr, Whale Watching Tour From Monterey, Elkhorn Slough Wildlife Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Monterey & Carmel?

    +

April to November for whales and calm seas. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Monterey & Carmel?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
