Very enjoyable experience.
Mum and 15 year old son did the three hour 13.30 whale spotting tour, 5th August 2026. The guys who ran the tour were knowledgeable, very friendly and determined to make sure we all had a nice time. One of them even sang a sea-shanty for us. The boat was not over-crowded, and the guides did a good job of managing expectations and tourist behaviour from the get-go which made it a relaxed trip (ie: no need to 'bag' a spot on the boat, no need to race to the front, we'll turn the boat to the side so everyone can view). I initially it thought was quite expensive at just under $80 pp but I guess the work is seasonal and they have to make hay whilst the sun shines. Plus they shared their photos from the trip for free. We saw whales. I am very glad I did this trip. Definitely worth it.

Whale watching from Monterey
Nicely run operation. Not their fault that the whales were not close enough for a good look, though we did see the backs and tails of several grey whales. Also saw a pod a dolphins, some sea otters and sea lions.

Great whale watching experience + dolphins
Def worth the time and money! We saw 4 whales + many dolphins. The staff and the biologist were exceptional and they've had years of experiences.

Whale watching once in a lifetime experience
Our family has talked about going whale watching for years but never made it happen until now. We had the best experience. We saw a pod of orcas with a baby napping and quietly cruised along beside them for an hour. When we turned off to leave them and see what else we could find we ended up in the middle of a super pod of white side dolphins who swam and jumped and played all around our boat. There were at least 300 dolphin. We had a great time. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting splashed in. We got a little wet and had to buy sweatpants at one of the shops.

Might have been great
They canceled the whale watching trip the evening before. No time to schedule another trip. Annoying waste of time and effort.
Response from the operator: Good morning, We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by the cancellation of your trip, and we fully understand the disappointment this causes. Unfortunately, even with constant monitoring, weather conditions can shift and escalate quickly. Our captains prioritize safety, and we would much rather notify you the night before than have you arrive at the dock only to find the trip canceled! Again, we sincerely apologize and we genuinely wish we would have been able to take you out whale watching! Best wishes and happy holidays, The Discovery Whale Watch team

Why this scores 78
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Afternoon Whale Watch: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Monterey & Carmel.
How much does Afternoon Whale Watch cost?
+
Prices start at $75 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Monterey & Carmel usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Afternoon Whale Watch take?
+
Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Monterey & Carmel is not rushed.
Is Afternoon Whale Watch worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 78 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 190 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most popular in Monterey & Carmel, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Afternoon Whale Watch?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Afternoon Whale Watch suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Afternoon Whale Watch?
+
Around 67 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Monterey & Carmel can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Monterey & Carmel and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Afternoon Whale Watch start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Monterey & Carmel within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Monterey & Carmel?
+
Monterey Bay is one of the best whale watching stretches in the world, alongside kayak tours over the kelp forest, 17-Mile Drive and Big Sur coastal runs, and Carmel wine walks. Boat size and naturalist quality decide the whale trips, and we score them accordingly. On Outty we rank every Monterey & Carmel experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Monterey's 17 Mile Drive Guided Electric Bike Tour, 3 hr, Whale Watching Tour From Monterey, Elkhorn Slough Wildlife Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Monterey & Carmel?
+
April to November for whales and calm seas. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Monterey & Carmel?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
