    6. Temple of Poseidon

Built between 444 and 440 BC, the temple was constructed of white marble quarried locally at lavreotic Olympus mountain, about 20km north of Cape Sounion . The architect is thought to be Iktinos, who built the Temple of Hephaestus in the Ancient agora in Athens. He built the 38 columns (16 still standing today) at the Temple of Poseidon in a way that ensured they would stand the test of time and resist the harshness of the environment, and made the Doric columns extra slender at the top so they would look taller from distance. In the Odyssey, Homer wrote that Sounion was the place where King Menelaus of Sparta buried his helmsman, who died at his post while rounding the cape. Alternatively, you should know that the views of the sunset from the temple are considered one of the best sights in all of Greece.

    Reliable and worth it

Since 2005, I and my family have had three different trips to Greece and we have used Athens Taxi Wagon, as we have never found a better service. We were heading on a cruise from Piraeus (October 2025) and we spent a few days in Athens both before and after. We wanted something to combine transfers with sightseeing and booked a five hour Cape Sounio tour with pickup from our Athens hotel and drop off at the cruise terminal. We hence made the most of our available time. Upon returned from the cruise, we were picked up directly from the port, enjoyed a full day trip to Delphi before being taken back to our hotel in Athens. The driver was Alexis and we appreciate that he even watched over our luggage while we explored. The archaeological sites were amazing. A local made the experience so much more meaningful by us talking about everyday life in Greece, history and culture. At the end of our stay, Alexis also arranged our early morning airport transfer at 5 am. As always, everything was on time, comfortable, and smooth. We have used private transfer and tour services in several other countries over the years, and I can confidently say that Athens Taxi Wagon stands out above them all. If you are looking for reliability, warmth, and a truly memorable experience in Greece, this is the company to go for.

Response from the operator: Dear adriansF5383EA, Thank you for your long term trust in Athens Taxi Wagon and for this wonderful account of your recent visits. It is a pleasure to know our private transfers and Athens tours continue to meet your expectations after so many years. I am glad the five hour Cape Sounio tour with hotel pickup and cruise terminal drop off made the most of your time, and that the full day Delphi trip after your cruise was enjoyable. I appreciate you mentioning the care with your luggage and the early morning 5 am airport transfer. Reliable, comfortable private transfers in our Mercedes-Benz vehicles and thoughtful local guidance are exactly what we aim to provide. Thank you again for your continued recommendations. We look forward to welcoming you back for more tailored Athens tours and stress free transfers on your next trip. Best Regards, Alexis of Athens Taxi Wagon.

Smooth and well organized : Far better than any cruise excursion we have done

The experience with Athens Taxi Wagon on our tour of Athens and Cape Sounio was smooth and well organized. Alexis was the driver and he was outstanding, because from the very beginning, everything felt easy as he knew the city and timed each stop so we avoided the crowds. We appreciate that he made sure we saw every important highlight without being hurried. He has a passion for Athens and shared history, local insights, and local stories along the way that made us connect with the places. It never felt like a scripted tour, but it was rather like exploring with someone who enjoys what he does. We were a bit unsure at first because we booked this independently (not through our cruise line). However, once we started off, we felt relaxed and looked forward to how it goes. Our experience was far better than any cruise excursion we have done. During a short stop Alexis surprised us with coffee, and later he recommended and took us to a nice local eatery for lunch. We even got to see the fresh fish of the day and choose our own. The meal was simple, fresh and we enjoyed it. If you are visiting Athens, and book with Athens Taxi Wagon, getting Alexis as your driver, would make this trip memorable.

Response from the operator: Dear V3485GZedwards, Thank you for sharing your experience and for describing your private tour of Athens and Cape Sounio in such an engaging way. It is very rewarding to know that the day felt smooth, well organized, and far exceeded what you have experienced on cruise excursions. I am pleased that the pacing of the tour and the careful timing helped you enjoy the main highlights without crowds or feeling rushed. Showing Athens and the surrounding areas in a relaxed and authentic way, while sharing local history and insights naturally along the route, is always my goal. Your trust in booking independently is truly appreciated, and I am glad that any initial uncertainty quickly turned into a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Moments like the coffee stop and the local lunch with fresh fish are meant to offer a genuine taste of Greece, and I am happy they became part of your memories. Thank you for your recommendation and kind words about Athens Taxi Wagon. It was a pleasure to spend the day with you, and I would be delighted to welcome you again on a future visit. Best Regards, Alexis of Athens Taxi Wagon.

    Cape Sounio with Alexis

We were looking for an escape the city for a while, so we booked a half day tour to Cape Sounio with Athens Taxi Wagon and we enjoyed a relaxed drive along the Athens Riviera before reaching the Temple of Poseidon. It turned out to be a good choice fur us and what we expected. Our driver, Alexis, arrived at our hotel (Divani Acropolis) on time and welcomed us with a smile. From the very beginning, we felt quite comfortable. He was not just friendly and easy to talk to, but also full of fascinating stories about local history. But, above all, a safe and confident driver. We were searching for a special gift for our grandson back home, and Alexis went out of his way to help us. He happily stopped at a couple of kiosks and even took extra time to save the addresses of two shops on my husband’s phone that he thought might have exactly what we were looking for. Thanks to his help, we found the perfect gift. The booking process with Athens Taxi Wagon was smooth, simple, and easy. Everything we should know was clear and it was well organized from start to finish. We already know that when we return to Greece, we will use their services again. We are especially excited about the idea of a two day Peloponnese tour, and we now hope Alexis will be our driver again because he made the experience so memorable. On a lighter note, we also spent part of the drive back chatting about NBA basketball. I still owe Alexis an apology that my Boston Celtics beat his Giannis recently, but after getting to know him and seeing what a genuinely wonderful person he is, I found myself quietly cheering for his team too. Do not hesitate for a second to book a tour or transfer with Athens Taxi Wagon. You will be well attended to and you will not be disappointed.

Response from the operator: Dear emiliacosmo88, Thank you very much for taking the time to share such a detailed and heartfelt review of your private Cape Sounio and Temple of Poseidon tour with Athens Taxi Wagon. I am truly pleased to know that the drive along the Athens Riviera, the relaxed pace of the excursion, and the overall organization met your expectations and made your escape from the city enjoyable. It means a lot to read your kind words about punctuality, comfort, and safety, as well as your appreciation for the local stories shared along the way. I am especially glad I could assist you in finding a meaningful gift for your grandson, as small personal touches are an important part of creating memorable private tours. Your comments about the smooth booking process and your interest in a future Peloponnese tour are greatly appreciated. It would be a real pleasure to welcome you back to Greece and assist you again on your next journey. Thank you once more for your trust, your warm recommendation, and even the friendly basketball conversation that made the day even more enjoyable. Best Regards, Alexis of Athens Taxi Wagon.

Cape Sounio and Temple of Poseidon Private Trip from Athens: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Athens.

How much does Cape Sounio and Temple of Poseidon Private Trip from Athens cost?

    +

Prices start at $390 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Athens usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Cape Sounio and Temple of Poseidon Private Trip from Athens take?

    +

Plan for about 5.3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Athens is not rushed.

Is Cape Sounio and Temple of Poseidon Private Trip from Athens worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 63 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 22 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Athens, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Cape Sounio and Temple of Poseidon Private Trip from Athens?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Cape Sounio and Temple of Poseidon Private Trip from Athens suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5.3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Cape Sounio and Temple of Poseidon Private Trip from Athens?

    +

Around 8 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Athens can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Athens and add a light layer if any part of the 5.3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Cape Sounio and Temple of Poseidon Private Trip from Athens start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Athens within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Athens?

    +

On Outty we rank every Athens experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Athens Small Group E-Bike Tour, Small Group Greek Traditional Food Tour in Athens 20+ Tastings, Athens Scenic Bike Tour with Regular or Electric Bike + Acropolis. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Athens?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Athens?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
