Authentic CapeTown highlight
It would be hard in a review to convey what a wonderful day I had with Shihaam and Janop at the Cape Malay cooking class. Actually to call it A cooking class is a bit of an understatement. This is definitely a cultural immersion. I was looking for a more authentic experience to add to my first trip to Cape Town and I certainly chose the right one. Shihaam was waiting for me at the old biscuit Mill where we took a stroll met some of the vendors, visited a vintage shop and basically learned the history of this interesting neighborhood as we walked back to the home. Learned about spices and technique, made the most tasty three course lunch. most rewarding was spending the day with Shihaam and her assistant Janop. They shared their heart, their food and their culture, it was definitely a highlight of my trip.

Not to be missed!
This was a wonderful day. We know how to cook but going through the steps of making a Cape Creole curry, folding the samoosas and rolling out the rotis was great fun, and the food was all delicious. The best part was the time spent with Shihaam and Janie. They were warm and generous ,and hearing about their lives and the history of the neighborhood was incredibly informative and moving. We can’t recommend this experience enough for everyone, tourists new to Cape Town as well as Capetonians who have grown up here. An experience not to be missed.

Vibrant and legit food experience
Our day qas perfect with the two hosts!!! The experience was supposed to end at 3pm, but at 4:30 we were still there talking and sharing stories and food recipes!! We learn how to fold samosa, how to appreciate different ingredients and my fav, the roti! Not a tourist trap at all

The best cooking class in Cape Town
If you're looking for a cooking class, this is your best bet. I got to be in one of their cooking classes and it was way better than I expected. There's nothing like learning about a local's history through their food. I had a blast cooking with them, just like when your grandma teaches you at home.

Best activity of our trip
Such a warm and welcoming class. Shihaam was a great guide and instructor. After our walking portion, we were greeted with a warm bite which we later learned how to make. It was a nice inversion at the beginning of the class to break up the eating. Cooking the main dishes was hands on and everyone got their turn to learn and cook. Phenomenal food! We made a perfect swordfish curry that I'm excited for recreating at home. I'm addition to the apps, main, bread, and dessert, they were great conversationalists and provided recommendations for our continued journeys in Cape Town. Thank you again for an incredible afternoon!

Cape Malay/Creole Cooking Class and Local Shopping in Salt River: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Cape Town.
How much does Cape Malay/Creole Cooking Class and Local Shopping in Salt River cost?
+
Prices start at $1500 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Cape Town usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Cape Malay/Creole Cooking Class and Local Shopping in Salt River take?
+
Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Cape Town is not rushed.
Is Cape Malay/Creole Cooking Class and Local Shopping in Salt River worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 63 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 24 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Cape Town, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Cape Malay/Creole Cooking Class and Local Shopping in Salt River?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Cape Malay/Creole Cooking Class and Local Shopping in Salt River suitable for kids and families?
+
The operator sets a minimum age of 15. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 3-hour running time when deciding.
How far in advance should I book Cape Malay/Creole Cooking Class and Local Shopping in Salt River?
+
Around 8 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cape Town can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Cape Town and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Cape Malay/Creole Cooking Class and Local Shopping in Salt River start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Cape Town within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Cape Town?
+
On Outty we rank every Cape Town experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Cape of Good Hope and Boulders Penguins Day Tour from Cape Town, Table Mountain, Boulders Penguins and Cape point Day Tour, Wine Tour: Paarl, Franschhoek & Stellenbosch incl 3 wineries. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Cape Town?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Cape Town?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
