What you get

    About this experience

There are very few places in the world where you can experience the stars in the sky and illuminated water around you at the same time. Our trip starts off with a beautiful sunset paddle in Griffin Bay off of San Juan Island where we kayak among harbor seals, roosting birds, and other wildlife. Then as the night progresses, the environment around us becomes even more serene as the bioluminescent sea life comes to life. This is one of those experiences that you will truly remember forever. Please contact Outdoor Odysseys directly to complete your waivers prior to the tour. The last ferry leaves Friday Harbor at 9:50pm and our June, July, and August tours end later.

    What you'll see and do

    1. Since 1987 we've been offering bioluminescent paddling as part of every one of our multi-day camping trips. In recent years we've decided to make that experience available to guests who prefer a shorter trip or have a specific interest in night paddling. Join us for a beautiful night paddle in Griffin Bay off San Juan Island among the bioluminescent micro flora and fauna of the Salish Sea! We’ll launch at sunset and kayak among harbor seals and roosting birds as we wait for the light show to begin. The waters are most serene and vacant of other boat traffic at night, but reactivated by fish and jellies in bioluminescence. We have scheduled trips during the new moons for the best conditions to see the bioluminescence, but can put together custom departures if those dates do not work for your group. Find out more about our trip below and we hope to see you on your next San Juan Island Kayak Tour!

    Magical tour. Do it!

What a fabulous experience with our guide Maddie! Her safety and info briefing on kayaks was top notch and very helpful in feeling safe and supported on the water in the dark. The bioluminescent water was so magical! Best experience was in a quiet dark bay she led us to. The night sky was amazing with the Milky Way clear to see. Loved it! Highly recommend this tour.

    Cold and fun experience

This was an educational and fun experience. The brightness of the bioluminescent light was less than I expected based on the tour advertisement photos. The night was lovely and we saw shooting stars which added to the experience.

Bioluminescence Kayak Tour in the San Juan Islands: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for San Juan Islands.

How much does Bioluminescence Kayak Tour in the San Juan Islands cost?

    +

Prices start at $165 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in San Juan Islands usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Bioluminescence Kayak Tour in the San Juan Islands take?

    +

Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in San Juan Islands is not rushed.

Is Bioluminescence Kayak Tour in the San Juan Islands worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 66 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.7/5 across 44 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in San Juan Islands, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Bioluminescence Kayak Tour in the San Juan Islands?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Bioluminescence Kayak Tour in the San Juan Islands suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Bioluminescence Kayak Tour in the San Juan Islands?

    +

Around 15 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in San Juan Islands can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in San Juan Islands and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Bioluminescence Kayak Tour in the San Juan Islands start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central San Juan Islands within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in San Juan Islands?

    +

The San Juan Islands are Washington's whale watching centre: orca and humpback boats, kayak tours through the channels, seaplane trips and island-hopping day tours from Seattle. On Outty we rank every San Juan Islands experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Whale Watching from Friday Harbor, Chuckanut Bay Distillery Tour with 2 Mini Cocktails and Gift Glass, Full Day San Juan Island Kayaking Adventure. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit San Juan Islands?

    +

May to September, with peak whale sightings in July and August. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in San Juan Islands?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
