Over 90% of this large island has been set aside as a Conservation Area and a Natural Area Preserve. Due to the protected status, there is an abundance of wildlife surrounding the island. Miles of trails are available to explore, some leading to stunning overlooks and others lead to private coves with pebble beaches. Few commercial companies venture to Cypress Island due to the challenges of where they operate from. Anacortes Kayak Tours is perfectly situated to enable them to escort a lucky few people to the "last best place" in the San Juan Islands. No ferry hassles are necessary to join this trip. Amazing experience! You made everything easy, from booking the trip, what to pack, where to meet, what to expect, to the experience itself! Our guide was fabulous! He was well-versed on the islands and an expert kayaker. I appreciated his patience, enthusiasm, and all the hard work involved in setting up camp and making all the delicious meals. Thank you so much for a trip of a lifetime!

A family misadventure
I had taken a half-day tour with this company a couple of years ago and had a great time and so decided to do an overnight trip with my family. Big mistake; I would highly recommend you look elsewhere. The guide we were paired with did not know anything about local flora, fauna or geology. But, more importantly, on the second day he gave us two choices—go back the way we came or take a slightly longer route (1 mile extra he said) with the current going in our favor. Apparently, he couldn’t read a map or a current/ tide chart. We looked at a map later and it was several additional nautical miles (7-8 nautical miles extra) and the current was strongly against us. He also kept mis-orienting us to various islands along the way. “It looks deceptively short!” he said time and again. Might have been fine for some, but the point here is that the guide had no idea what he was doing and couldn’t even inform us appropriately on the options. He also mentioned that he was leaving the next day to lead a multi-day tour from the San Juans (we left from Anacortes) and that he had never even taken the route or been to the area before being assigned a group to lead. Not exactly an experienced, well trained guide worth the money and time! The gear was in good shape, the food was ok but we would have preferred to bring our own (costco lox and bagels at 3PM as a lunch after being taken on an extremely long and hard paddle of which we were not appropriately informed did not exactly hit the spot—quite the opposite). We have had great guides and overnights leaving from Orcas and Vancouver Island—go with another outfit.

When we arrived to pick up your gear after the trip your husband was praising the experience, and you were very generous in the tip you left your guide. These are not typically things that happen after a negative experience. However, it seems clear that we did not meet your expectations and that is very unfortunate. After a long debrief with Bence it seems that he made an error on the last day which caused your return to be more effortful than it could have been. On the first day your family proved to be very strong paddlers and you completed the 8.5 mile trip to the camp area much faster than most groups do. Bence was enjoying your company and he wanted to make the trip special for you by showing your family some different scenery on the return route. Unfortunately your group was slower on the last day than he had anticipated and so consequently you missed your tides and had to paddle “uphill” for a little bit against the oncoming flood tide. For the record, the route you took that day was 12.2 miles, or less than 4 extra miles. Certainly not 7-8 additional miles that you claim. I’m sure that it felt longer when you were paddling against the current for that short bit. I’m not sure why he would have told you that it was “only one more mile longer”, and he honestly does not recall saying that, but it is obvious that he should have been much more explicit in explaining the exact route length and the extra effort required so that you could have made a more informed choice. We have shared your review with our guide staff so that everybody can learn from this and hopefully avoid a similar mistake on the future. I have to address your comments about his leading a trip the following day. I do not think that it is fair for you to cast aspersions at our operation for things that you don’t fully understand. It is not a problem for a well trained guide to lead trips to places that they haven’t been. That is the whole point of having competent guides to lead trips. For anyone else reading this, Bence’s trip was fantastic. You can scroll down this review feed to July 6 and read a 5* review from one of the participants, titled “Amazing Experience and Guide”. He also received two additional 5* reviews on Google from people on that trip. Also, we are proud of how well our meal planning has been received by our guests over all these years. It is one of the things which we seem to excel at and our reviews reflect this. It is true that some ingredients are sourced at Costco, much like restaurants use distributors like Sysco. Lots of our ingredients are locally sourced as well. We buy things from the Farmers Market every week, and from local growers too. The garlic you enjoyed on your dinner that night was grown (organically, of course) right in our own backyard garden. I feel like your disparagement of the lunch reflects more on being tired and frustrated than anything else, but it is still regrettable. Bence waited too long to serve lunch because he wanted to get you across the channel before the currents would have made the paddling more strenuous. Anyway, although it is always difficult to read these kinds of reviews, I do appreciate receiving critical feedback. I just wish you had expressed your feelings to us directly on the beach, or when you received our message asking for feedback. It is way better to communicate directly, in our experience. We will use it in future training to make our program stronger and better and I thank you for that.

Great trip!
This was a great trip! Wolf was a knowledgeable and approachable guide, easy to talk to, but also aware of the group’s needs. He also prepared fantastic meals, and had been well-briefed on the group’s dietary needs. They sent us by water taxi to the island to make sure we got campsites (holiday weekend), which was wise because the campground filled up quickly. We went on a day paddle instead, and had time to hike before dinner. The 2 channel crossing back to Anacortes was a bit challenging due to currents and boat traffic, but the route was well-chosen and we didn’t have any problems. Very fun weekend, and a professional company.

Absolutely amazing!
We did the 3 day Cypress Island Kayak tour and hands down probably the most amazing trip I’ve ever taken! I honestly can not think of one negative thing! Gabe was amazing (it is obvious he loves what he does!), so knowledgeable about the area, the waters, the animals (we saw so many animals/birds!) etc, our group was small and fun, the food was better than I eat at home! And we barely had to lift a finger (except to paddle of course!). I will tell all my friends about this and let them know how smoothe it all was from reservation to completion! I will remember this trip always. Thank you so much! And the cherry on top of an already amazing trip was the pod of orcas we got to watch twice!! ❤️❤️😀

Disappointing
Unfortunately this trip was a bust. Guides were pleasant enough but not skilled in reading currents. The route was exceptionally boring. We just crossed 2 busy channels and made camp. There is no attempt to group people according to ability thus there are some who could hardly get into a kayak along with the fit and capable. The food was the cheapest they could find from Costco. Very disappointing.

We would appreciate it if you could contact us directly to give us some more information about why we seemed to have fallen short with your expectations. We don't always get everything perfect and so we value critical feedback. I do, however, have to come to the defense of the guides regarding your comments about their knowledge of the local currents. They are very well-versed in the tidal complexities of our area. After a long debriefing with both guides it does seem like the first crossing wasn't optimal. The group got started later than they had hoped and so the perfect tides were missed. On the second day of the trip the guides wanted to take the group home along a different route, but your husband told them that his should was hurting. It was an overnight (2-day) trip and the nature of those outings is generally paddling out to camp and then paddling home. There aren't any middle days for exploring. The guides always offer to take people on afternoon/evening paddles but it sounds like your group was not interested in more paddling. I am not sure why someone would call the waters you paddled through "boring"? Perhaps that is something you could discuss with us if you call. As far as matching people up by their strengths, it would be lovely if there would be a way to do that. I wish that we had a crystal ball that would tell us the skills and abilities of everyone who books with us. However, that notion is a lot trickier that it may seem. We are booking people who we've never met. If you had called us to tell us that you had a particular expectation of how fast/slow you wanted to go then it might have made it easier to try and make something work. We could have at least made it clear you that you were not booking a private trip and then you could have chosen for yourself whether a group trip would meet your needs. Whenever we see a clear disparity between parties (small children, for example) we do our best to match guests up. It doesn't always work perfectly, but we try. With all due respect, the comment on the food is ridiculous and unfair. Sure, we source some ingredients from Costco...just like most of your favorite restaurants are likely to do (if Cisco doesn't have what they need). We also source food from the Skagit Valley Co-op, the Anacortes Farmer's Market, Safeway, and from our own private organic garden. There is nothing "cheapest" about our food, and readers can peruse hundreds of our reviews across various platforms to see what other guests have said about the meal plans. If there is one place that we are not afraid to spend money, it is with the food. Thank you for the feedback. We will use it to try and avoid future disappointments with our other guests.
