What you get

    About this experience

Start your Lisbon day in Belém, the riverside quarter once a fishing village where Portugal's Age of Discovery began. This 2-hour Belém tour leads you through Lisbon's grandest historic district alongside a licensed local guide who knows its stories firsthand. Follow the Tagus riverfront past palaces, gardens and monuments raised at the height of Portugal's seafaring golden age. Step inside the Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage masterpiece, and see the church where Vasco da Gama lies buried, after pausing for the original custard tart at the pastry shop that has guarded its recipe since 1837. Take in the great riverside landmarks — the Monument to the Discoveries and the Belém Tower, the fortified gateway from which explorers once set sail for the unknown — and learn how these voyages reshaped Portugal and the wider world. With a small group and an expert local at the helm, you'll uncover the stories behind the monuments most visitors photograph but never understand.

    Belem and river ride tour

Our tour started out not very good. First, there was noone to meet us that had a red umbrella or shirt. If I hadn't have been walking around asking we would have missed the tour. Our tour guide was great and apogized, she is very knowlegable about Portugal and history. The boat ride was very cold and wet because of weather. Our walking and discussion was good. Overall a good experience.

    Bad to terrible

Poorly planned meeting location, was there for over an Hor on Tuesday and could not locate the Representative (Red Umbrella and Red Shirt). Call and was told to go back Thursday, found White Umbrella with Red Emblem and was told that the tour was cancelled for Thursday, Wasted 2 days with no tour, Requested refund and have no received any compensation. Very por service

    An afternoon well spent

The day we did the tour was extremely hot but our guide Bruno made every effort to ensure our group was comfortable. Showing us frequently where to top up on water and always finding some shade to pass on all of his information.

Good for getting the lay of the land

Extensive walking tour, no stops for shade or to hydrate. Saw much of the sights of Belém, but only from the outside. It would have been more interesting to include at least one tour of either the tower or the monastery. Ending at the infamous Pasteis de Belém (sweets not included) was nice. Getting back to the original meeting point (not included) was frustrating but achievable (Uber).

Response from the operator: Dear Jennifer, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, and please accept our apologies for the delay in responding. We've been reviewing older reviews one by one to ensure every guest receives a reply. We're pleased to hear that the tour gave you a good introduction to Belém and that you enjoyed finishing near the famous Pastéis de Belém. At the same time, we appreciate your thoughtful feedback. We understand that the amount of walking, particularly on warmer days, can be demanding, and we agree that opportunities to pause for shade or hydration are important. We also understand your wish to have visited one of the monuments from the inside. Our tour is designed as a walking introduction to Belém, focusing on the history and the exterior of its iconic landmarks, as entrance times and ticketing would significantly extend the duration of the experience. However, we appreciate that this may not have been clear from your expectations. We also regret that returning to the original meeting point felt inconvenient. Since the tour ends in Belém, many guests choose to continue exploring the area or return to the city centre independently using public transport, taxis, or rideshare services. Your comments have been shared with our team, and as we've been revisiting these older reviews, we can confidently say that we've continued refining the experience by improving pre-tour information and reviewing the pace and structure of the route to make it as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Thank you again for your balanced and constructive feedback. We hope to welcome you on another SANDEMANs experience in the future. Warm regards, Karla S. | SANDEMANs Tours

Belém Morning Walking Tour: Discoveries, Gold & Pastéis: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Lisbon.

How much does Belém Morning Walking Tour: Discoveries, Gold & Pastéis cost?

    +

Prices start at $26 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Lisbon usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Belém Morning Walking Tour: Discoveries, Gold & Pastéis take?

    +

Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Lisbon is not rushed.

Is Belém Morning Walking Tour: Discoveries, Gold & Pastéis worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 73 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.6/5 across 162 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Lisbon, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Belém Morning Walking Tour: Discoveries, Gold & Pastéis?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Belém Morning Walking Tour: Discoveries, Gold & Pastéis suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Belém Morning Walking Tour: Discoveries, Gold & Pastéis?

    +

Around 57 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Lisbon can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Lisbon and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Belém Morning Walking Tour: Discoveries, Gold & Pastéis start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Lisbon within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Lisbon?

    +

On Outty we rank every Lisbon experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Lisbon City Center Tour - The Unmissable Lisbon, Sintra Private Trip from Lisbon Customizable Dreamlike Experience, True 4Hour Private Tuk Tuk Tour: Discover Lisbon with a Local!. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Lisbon?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Lisbon?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
