  2. Ek Phnom

Situated about 10 km north of the Cobra Bridge are the ruins of Ek Phnom. It was built during the Bayon period and unfortunately is much worse for the wear than Phnom Banan. It's an interesting place, however, because there is a freshly constructed working temple right in front of the ruins. This temple, along with the temple ruins, is the center of holiday festivities for the people of the nearby village. They dress up in their Sunday best and have a celebration between the old and the new temples and climb all around the ruins with their families. The ruins are on a very small hill so there is no workout involved in viewing them much of the temple is in shambles and was heavily looted. There are still some sitting Buddha images intact higher up on the walls. On the inside is a carving of a tug-of-war with participants tugging away on a serpent. The participants on the left have lost their heads to looters (they lost face), with the guys on the right still having their heads intact.

The Bamboo Train ride was so much fun.

Our tour guide Kosorl was very knowledgeable about the Battambang town and region, sharing many interesting insights to give my partner Lewis and I a good understanding of its history of old and new. He took us to two traditionally built Cambodian homes around 120 years old, housing 5 generations of their family. Their owners shared many interesting details of their occupancy. We had a wonderfully fun time riding the Bamboo Train, an experience not to be missed. We had lunch at a Cambodian restaurant with a wide choice of food excellently prepared. We were looked after with a constant supply of cold water and a skilled and safe driver. We highly recommend Kosorl's (Mr K's), tours. We asked him to take us the next day on a tour of local villages, where we experienced the real life of the rural communities.

The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Siem Reap?

+

How many days do you need in Siem Reap?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
