An excellent small tour run by a sweet family
Irwin is an excellent, knowledgeable guide and just a nice guy. You visit a palenque where he explains each step of the process of making artisanal mezcal, the difference from the industrial and traditional processes and the difference between the types of plants used. You meet a sweet horse named Suzy and taste the different mezcals including those made from the undomesticated plants which are not so easy to find elsewhere (at least without a hefty price tag). Irwin then takes you to his own fields and shows you how to cut off the leaf of a maguey plant (as well as take a shot off of one) and you head to his mother’s store where she sells his mezcal along with beautiful hand embroidered clothes. Finally, his cousin prepares a great lunch for you in their space next door. This is an excellent small tour (we literally had one person with us making for a total of 3 people) that is family run. Highly recommend!!

Must-book Mezcal Tour
Irvin is the friendliest man we met on our trip to Oaxaca. He has a genuine passion for mezcal and for connecting with the people on this tour. The transportation, mezcal, food, and wealth of information from the tour are easily worth twice the price. Do yourself a favor and just book this tour.

Highlight in Oaxaca
We had the best time on this tour! Irvin is great company, funny and easy to talk to. We visited an agave field with the palenque's maestro to see how the plants are grown and harvested, and we got to try cutting the leaves ourselves (with limited success 😁). We then did an excellent tasting of many different mezcals, and had a delicious lunch of traditional Oaxacan food made at the palenque. It was definitely one of the highlights of our time in Oaxaca!

best mezcal tour in oaxaca !
this is 100% the best way to experience a traditional mezcal tour in oaxaca! it was just me and my partner and irvin personally drove us all the way to mitla and then onwards to his friends ancestral mezcal distillery. You get to try so many mezcals and we even got to taste a new batch that hadn’t been bottled yet. Irvin is very friendly and knowledgeable to answer all of your questions! his auntie makes you food that you eat in the middle of his own agave field and then you go to a different artisanal mezcal distillery! there’s options to buy different mezcals as you go as well. This is by far the only right way to get a real and authentic mezcal experience, i couldn’t recommend it enough :))

Mil gracias, Irvin!
We had the best time with Irvin, our super friendly guide that knew everything about the area and mezcal. It felt like spending the day with a friend. He drove us safely to his hometown, where we got to visit two palenques run by his friends, both showcasing different traditional production methods. We particularly fell in love with the first place, Herencia de Lucas, that produces the most delicious mezcal with ancestral methods. Another highlight was definitely the picnic in Irvin's agave fields, where we sat in the shade of an umbrella and had delicious tacos made by his mum, and of course more mezcal! Also, we were grateful that Irvin was very attentive towards the fact that one of us has a walking disability and made sure the experience was equally accessible and enjoyable for her. All in all, I can only recommend this tour to anybody that values small groups and a truly authentic and personal experience guided by a local. Thank you!

Why this scores 68
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Authentic Mezcal Experience Oaxaca Small Group Local Producers: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Oaxaca City.
How much does Authentic Mezcal Experience Oaxaca Small Group Local Producers cost?
+
Prices start at $100 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Oaxaca City usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Authentic Mezcal Experience Oaxaca Small Group Local Producers take?
+
Plan for about 5.3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Oaxaca City is not rushed.
Is Authentic Mezcal Experience Oaxaca Small Group Local Producers worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 68 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 6 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Oaxaca City, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Authentic Mezcal Experience Oaxaca Small Group Local Producers?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Authentic Mezcal Experience Oaxaca Small Group Local Producers suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5.3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Authentic Mezcal Experience Oaxaca Small Group Local Producers?
+
Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Oaxaca City can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Oaxaca City and add a light layer if any part of the 5.3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Authentic Mezcal Experience Oaxaca Small Group Local Producers start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Oaxaca City within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Oaxaca City?
+
On Outty we rank every Oaxaca City experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include AUTHENTIC OAXACA CULTURAL FOOD TOUR, eat like a local., Hierve el Agua 2.5 hours, Mitla, Tule, Rugs and Mezcal for a Day, Traditional Oaxaqueña Cooking with Grandma's Recipes. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Oaxaca City?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Oaxaca City?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
