Our private visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau with KrakowDirect was an experience we will never forget, and we were very grateful we decided to do the trip as a private tour. From the moment we were collected in a new Mercedes van, our driver, Konrad, was professional, punctual and welcoming. He was also incredibly knowledgeable about Poland and its history, and it was a pleasure chatting with him throughout the journey as he shared more about the country’s history and what it was like growing up in Poland. He ensured everything ran smoothly, allowing us to focus on the significance of the day rather than the logistics. At the memorial, our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and presented the history with compassion, dignity and respect. The tour was educational, confronting and deeply moving. Walking through the camps where so much unimaginable suffering took place is something that cannot truly be understood until you stand there yourself. Seeing the conditions, the cramped barracks, punishment cells and remnants of the machinery of genocide, along with the thousands of personal belongings left behind, makes the scale of what happened painfully real. Seeing mountains of shoes, luggage, spectacles, cooking pots and other possessions, and learning about the human hair that was removed from prisoners, was particularly confronting. Each item belonged to a person, a family and a life that was taken away. Learning about the systematic cruelty inflicted on innocent people, the dehumanisation of prisoners and the selection process they faced upon arrival was heartbreaking. Then standing at Birkenau beside the railway tracks, where families arrived often unaware of the fate awaiting them, made it impossible not to imagine the fear, confusion and heartbreak experienced by so many. It is difficult to describe the emotions that accompany this visit. It is heavy. It is confronting. It is heartbreaking. The overwhelming feeling is not simply sadness, but disbelief that human beings could inflict such calculated cruelty upon other human beings, with such complete disregard for life, dignity and compassion. This is not a tour you enjoy in the traditional sense, but it is one that everyone should experience to better understand one of history’s darkest chapters and the importance of ensuring it is never forgotten. Thank you, Konrad, our wonderful guide, and the entire KrakowDirect team for providing such a well-organised, knowledgeable and respectful experience. Choosing the private tour made the day feel particularly personal and gave us the space to absorb and reflect on everything we were seeing.

Auschwitz-Birkenau Tour
Adam was a great advocate for the tour from the moment he picked us up from the hotel and made sure we were at the right location at the right time. He was very knowledgeable in the history of the concentration camps himself and showed us a video before going of what life was like for the prisoners. Mario then took us around both camps and executed it perfectly. I would highly recommend Krakow Direct for organising a tour again.

Wojtek did a great job! I was late but he was patient and got us there in time. Good driving. Very knowledgeable, told good stories. When we decided to leave after Auschwitz he was again flexible and toured the area outside of Birkenbau. Professional and kind. You can trust him!
