What you get
About this experience
Sitting majestically off the coast, Rangitoto’s distinctive symmetrical cone rises 260m over the Hauraki Gulf. Boasting a unique landscape of rugged lava crops, lush native bush and sandy coves. This not to be missed walk to the summit takes about an hour at an easy pace. Lookouts along the way provide stunning views as you climb - make sure to leave enough time to detour and explore the lava caves. Plan your visit in advance and ensure you arrive with plenty of time to meet the return ferry to downtown Auckand. All visitors must bring their own food and drink, there is nothing available to purchase or drink on the island.

Mission Possible
Be ready to hike! Depending on which harbor you arrive in, you have a 60 minute or 90 minute uphill hike to the summit. It’s all or nothing because if you don’t make it to the summit, you get no beautiful view. Just a nice walk in a lava field. Bring your own food and drink and there are no picnic tables to eat at. You have four hours to climb to the summit, take your selfie, eat your food, and get back down before the ferry leaves. That is your mission if you choose to accept.

Not a great experience!!
The Ferry was cancelled and we could not take the next one due to other time commitments. Check in first before you go as we had no notification until we arrived at the Ferry Dock.

Rangitoto Island is...
Rangitoto Island is beautiful, unlike anywhere else I have been. The lava flows were spectacular. Would recommend a visit.

Timely departures but booking is missing an option to select a return ferry time
The ferry to Rangitoto arrived on time. However, this particular online booking system done through Viator (this platform) needs to be changed! When making the booking, you can only select the departure time, but not the return time. On the way to the island, we were told the ferry would come pick us up at three different times: 12:45pm, 2:30pm, and 3:30pm. When we lined up for the 12:45pm ferry back to Auckland, they were checking tickets to see if we had the correct departure time. People who purchased their tickets in-person or at the kiosk were fine, but we were not because on Viator, selecting a return time was not an option. The booking only allows you to select a departure time. It notes that the return ferry is included in the price, but does not offer the option to select the return ferry time. Luckily, we explained it to the boat crew when we boarded the return ferry, and they let us on the boat, but please, can you modify the Viator booking to allow for the option to select a return ferry time as well?

Bad information.
Found out before excursion that there was no food or water on the island. We did not have any supplies, so we tried to cancel. But Viator said it was too late cancel. So we did not go and hand to forfeit what we paid for the tickets.

Why this scores 57
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Auckland to Rangitoto Island Ferry: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Auckland.
How much does Auckland to Rangitoto Island Ferry cost?
+
Prices start at $27 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Auckland usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Auckland to Rangitoto Island Ferry take?
+
Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Auckland is not rushed.
Is Auckland to Rangitoto Island Ferry worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 57 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.2/5 across 113 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable food & drink in Auckland, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Auckland to Rangitoto Island Ferry?
+
No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.
Is Auckland to Rangitoto Island Ferry suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Auckland to Rangitoto Island Ferry?
+
Around 40 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Auckland can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Auckland and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Auckland to Rangitoto Island Ferry start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Auckland within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Auckland?
+
On Outty we rank every Auckland experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves Guided Day Trip from Auckland incl lunch, Hobbiton Movie Set Small Group Tour with Cheeky Kiwi Travel, Hobbiton & Waitomo Glowworm Caves Tour with Lunch from Auckland. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Auckland?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Auckland?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
